Crikey, do you double up as a Science teacher as well? ha ha :)

So by lowering the tax on diesels, don't you think that kind of encourages people to buy diesels?? Therefore, increasing demand for Diesel and so usage?

To put it another way look at which cars are holding their money currently and it is mainly diesels due to the current high demand for them. Trust me I am in the process of looking.......mainly at Honda Civics at the minute, the honda 2.2 cdti type s gt is a blooming nightmare to get hold of. And why am I looking at it.....because the tax is cheaper!

£260 a year for tax, are you driving a 2.5/3 litre petrol job then?

I just don't think that it is working by keeping the Diesel tax so cheap as if more and more drivers move over to Diesel, have we achieved anything?

They are a little, but it is part of the CO2 reduction plan, which they will pat themselves on the back for despite making the air quality worse.

2.0l turbo, but I don't do many miles and its fun drive.

In the scheme of things a reduction in flat (road) tax isn't much, well, it is enough to convince people to change, but the government gain almost as much from a couple of tanks of fuel when its taxed at nearly 60%. Don't know how long you've been driving, but diesel used to be about 20% cheaper than petrol, now its 5% more expensive, everyone wants one even when some modern many petrol cars can do 50-70 mpg!

Completely agree with you

I drive a 1.6 petrol and the Tax is just under 200, but it drinks petrol like no tomorrow (30MPG) I'm trying to replace with something more efficient but they are rather expensive!

For car insurance, you MUST move every year. Forget the renewal price, you will always get ripped off if you stay with the same company.

I don't know about moving every year sure I'd check out what I can get insurance for elsewhere and then use that stick to bet my current insurer with.

Long story short, several years on I have a Y reg Vectra I can't afford to replace that costs me £270 a year in Road tax and when my insurance renewal came through they want £825 to insure me!!!! I have over 9 years of no claims bonus, I'm 29 years old and have never (touch wood) so far had a motoring conviction or accident or claim of any kind!!! The insurance is more than the car is worth.

Start phoning around for quotes. There's no way you should be paying anything like that! Sounds like they've charged you the premium without subtracting the no-claims bonus? Either that or your postcode is in the middle of a warzone?

I tend to do the Agregators and then ring up elephant who I am with and tell them that the company which they trade (Admiral, Elephant and a load of others are the same company) as is giving me cheaper so match it and they do!

Admiral's plan is if they are going to be cheapest is flood the top 5/6 results with 4 of them under different names and the likely hood is they will be chosen.

Sod phoning, moneysupermarket.com does work well and you'll get 50 quotes quicker than 1 phone call.

I did actually save (not advertising for them) £300 (50%) when my current insurer matched a "competitors" (actually part of the same company) quote.

No idea how you manage that as whenever I try they just don't budge so this year am having to swap to Octogan ( Octagon ) whatever there name is

They are basically price matching themselves!

There are lots of factors with insurance that they judge you on but cannot actually cancel your policy if you lie.. the main one being rather then saying single say partnered - it just means you have a bf/gf and drops the price a lot as you are less likely to crash (somehow!).

Also if mum/dad have lots of no claims put them on the policy. I'm 21 and it dropped mine by 300 quid adding my step mum who hasn't claimed on a policy in 15 years!

My brother works for an insurance firm and tends to play with mine until hes got it cheap with lots of variations, but don't use your real name otherwise they clock it and stop providing quotes!

FTR, just did a quote on Octagon and they were worse than my renewal quote with Direct Line. Cheapest quote I've had is Swiftcover :-S

Re: Adding others to the policy, if I add Le Boyfriend it halves the policy for no apparent reason, but if I add my Mum or Dad it doubles the policy again!!! Craziness!!!

Someone buy me a Prius. ;)

Insurance sucks for having an old car too, but then again I see some people's insurance costs and I think I've got it easy! 215 quid a year to tax isn't good though :( Cheaper to insure and tax a ferrari 355 modena!

they are less green than most cars over the full life as you have to make and then recycle at least one set of big heavy batteries (and probably more like a set every ~5 years)

Push Bike?

No tax, insurance, petrol (well, food), MOT...

Quite. In fact, very quite.

There's a guy near me who uses an electric bicycle and he flies along. A friend knows him, and he says that the owner told the bike's computer that he uses tiny wheels, which thanks to our friend PI means that the bike zooms along far faster than its restricted speed.

I love the way that if you are poorer and can only afford to run an older car, generally you will pay a higher Road Tax due to older less efficient engines as well as higher running costs. However, if you are well off and go out and buy a new, modern car, you often see reduced Road Tax due to less emissions and you also pay less in fuel duty due to having to fill up less. Totally unrecognised is the fact that manufacturing new vehicles on a mass scale is horrendous on resources and the environment - whereas getting full use of an old car is MUCH less harmful in the longer term.

Generally, as a rule then, the poor once again pay more for the privilege of getting from A to B, often just to earn a living wage (and pay tax on earnings - see where I am going here?).

The world does not make sense at all!

Amen! It still amuses me when people buy new cars because "it's better for the environment/more economical". Yep, sure it is

I could not have said it better myself. You are absolutely right. The only reason I haven't ditched the Vectra is that replacing it would cost me more than it saves. Even taking into account my terrible 28MPG consumption rate on it. Say I bought an Astra for £2000 off death row (partner works in motor industry, first pick of part exed cars at cost price + a bit), the finance I'd need to buy the thing (since unsurprisingly I don't have £2000 floating around) would cost me around £110 a month (lets also take into account the interest I'd pay on top of the original amount borrowed causing said car to actually cost more overall), thats £1320 a year. Lets say it only costs £70 to tax, insurance is STILL £600 for me and I don't know why!!!! (I did a quote on Le Boyfriends Astra to test this theory - I don't know why my insurance is so damn high!!!! I've never had an accident and have over 9 years of No claims bonus and held my licence for over 10 years!). So even without MOT and service costs (which would be roughly the same as I'm paying for the Vectra), buying a new car would cost me £1990 a year (more or less) as opposed to the £670 the Vectra costs me. So buying a new car is false economy. Tyres and brake pads are consumable and I'll still have to pay for them whatever I do and the cost difference will be negligable between a Vectra and an Astra or Focus, expensive stuff like exhaust systems are expensive across the board too so really, I genuinely can't afford to replace the car. When it eventually dies an unrecoverably expensive death I don't know what I'm going to do!

Re: Economical - Isn't there some old airfield somewhere covered with part-exed old cars no-one wants. The only thing green about that is the weeds growing up through the asphalt...

Yes indeed, and about 1/3 of them are better than what I drive now. I didn't subscribe as I didn't see how spending thousands to save a few MPG could be financially sensible, especially on a brand-new car whose value would plummet like a meteorite. And meteors always fall, never rise - I've checked.
