Change Proxy Settings/Internet Properties not available

Using System Restore is a good idea if SFC doesn't fix the Internet issue.

fingers crossed as no idea how to reinstall Windows as it is a netbook with no disc drive.

If you press F9 when your netbook boots up, do you have an option to re-install Windows / perform a factory reset...?

How to Restore the EeePC to its Factory Settings

If you have somehow messed up your EeePC but still have the factory OS loaded on it, you can restore it to the original, out-of-the-box settings in under 5 minutes.

First off, make sure you have all your important data backed up to an external drive or SD card and then reboot you EeePC. Please note that any additional software that was installed will also be erased.

When the EeePC reboots press the F9 key over and over under you get to a black screen that has an option to “Restore to Factory Settings”. Select that option and wait about a minute or so and the EeePC will reboot itself. (Source)

Should have a recovery partition as earlier discussed and following the instructions above, just make sure you backup any documents to a usb stick first.

I have tried to get to the Restore Factory Settings screen as I found that online but pressing F9 just gives me the option to go into Windows 7 or go into Windows Memory Diagnostics. Selecting Windows 7 just starts it as normal.

System restore to an earlier point when the netbook was working ok ? assuming system restore is enabled and working ok ?

If system restore works ok and restores to when it was working, I would be tempted to start windows 7 in safe mode ( if it has safe mode option, F8 prior to windows logo / windows loading ) and running the anti malware and anti virus scans in safe mode. Obviously ensuring all anti malware and anti virus definitions are up to date.

You have to disable BootBoost first I believe.

Press F2 as the system boots and that should bring up a menu. Press F2 again and you should be able to disable BootBoost.

Reboot and then press F9.

I've done it!!! OMG, I can't believe it!!

The solution? Completely remove IE9 and roll back to IE8 - simple as that!!

Thank you so much for all your help.

Glad to hear you sorted it in the end. :)

Re: the logs files in post #53. There seem to be rather a lot of corrupt files. If you have problems in the future, I would definitely recommend using the factory reset option.

The FixIt from KB923737 does exactly the same thing as post #31. I extracted the VBScript from the MSI to double-check. This explains why the error message is the same. :)

What's the point in having multiple ms kb's that do the exact same thing. Hold on I'd better create another ms kb and upload the same MSI !!!!

I'm a bit scared to do the factory reset now that the original problem is fixed although that was my next step. Could doing a factory reset cause more harm than good or is that impossible?

KB2289942 simply unchecks the option labelled 'Use a proxy server for your LAN' (under LAN Settings on the Connections tab) and KB923737 completely resets your Internet Explorer settings.

The latter would be the best one to download out of the two since it resets more things. It's a shame it didn't work for 69Liz though.

As long as the recovery partition hasn't been corrupted too, then you should be fine. As @plexer and @mac_shinobi mentioned above, it would be a good idea to backup any data you have saved on your netbook (e.g. in the documents/pictures folders) and drivers (which are sometimes saved in a folder called Drivers on your C: drive). You will also need to re-install any applications you installed yourself since these will be deleted.

You could continue using the netbook for a few days/weeks to see if any other problems crop up?

Thanks. Yes, I think I will leave it for now. I have backed up his documents - not a lot as he has only been using it for school work for 6 months and will get the Drivers off if I can find them.

Then send him back to school with it and see how he gets on.

Enormous thanks for all your help.

look at mozy and backblaze.

Slightly off-topic, but do you know if Mozy have fixed the issue described here? I stopped using Mozy after this happened to me. :(
