When trying to download a docx document from a website it saves it as a zip file.

This happenes on both windows xp and windows 7 machines only running ie8 and is not a problem for machines running firefox or safari.

we have tried changing 'open files based on content, not file extension' to disable, this doesnt work as it just opens up in ie as symbols.

Does this happen on any other website?

We have this problem with email attachments...the only reliable fix I have found is to rename the file back to .docx after saving it...

I've seen this twice, once where the webserver was not configured correctly - it was telling the clients the file was a .zip file, IIRC something to do with the mime type.

The second time was when a previous version of Office (pre .docx support) had not had the Office 2007 (?) compatibility pack installed.

Yeap, this is a problem with the webserver not having the content types configured correctly.

Thank you; I did wonder if I'd remembered this accurately while I was posting.
