enjay Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Anyone got any experience with touch-screen monitors? We're looking for something a little more "hands-on" for our youngest pupils than an Interactive Whiteboard (the youngest pupils struggle to "get" a 72-inch display when they're right up close and personal with it). We ruled out iPads almost immediately, as we're not convinced they're up to surviving unsupervised play by a bunch of 3-year-olds; also, the teacher would prefer something wall mounted, which excludes Smart Tables/MS Surface/etc. All that brings us to touch-screen monitors. Any product recommendations, good or bad?

SYNACK Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 We have a couple of 22" hp touch screens that work well. They aren't really used that much for their touch ability though which I point out when someone pipes up with the 'touch interface will change everything' junk from various courses. The standard responce is 'why don't you use the tour screens in the library though' which actually makes them think about it. They were like an extra $100 NZD so around an extra 50 pounds from standard moniters. We like them as they are tough glass but also include the touch for a tiny bit more than just getting a tough one. 1

Given that these will be used by 3-year-olds, we need something highly durable, poke-proof, vomit-proof, etc. Are there hard-glass options, or is that not possible given that they have to be touch-sensitive?
Scifigirl Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 We bought some iiyama 22" touch screens for £190 each-- work well, pretty sturdy too. W7 only tho. Special needs school so they do get bashed around a bit.

Depends on the tech, the hp ones use an infra red border that tracks fingers when the oclude the light at various points. The glass is reasonably tough but not hit it with a hammer tough.

Do you see much interference from other things near the screen, e.g. the rest of the child's hand or their other hand? The glass is reasonably tough but not hit it with a hammer tough. That's fine, we're not looking for indestructible, just able to withstand a room full of excited 3-year-olds. With that, how easy are they to clean? Ideally, the monitors should be able to be sprayed with anti-bac and then wiped with a wet cloth (and, if we're being honest, able to handle being vomited on!)
