talksr Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Good morning fellow edugeekers. My school has recently purchased one Apple iPad for senco use. I would like to install some apps to get the staff started with the ipad. I have created a school apple id with the school email, address etc. But when I then go onto the App Store to download some apps (free ones at the moment), the iPad says it needs more info and it wants a credit card to be added even if I am downloading free apps. Is there a way of bypassing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated
ste1988 Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 If this is for one member of staff to use only, our staff have added their own apple id's and they claim back the apps they bought for work. For school use, we have a school account setup, but they do require a card on file, i don't like it but as far as i know, there isn't a way round it

We don't have a school credit card, so this will make things very hard. Rob

It says: "Payment method, please select a payment method" Visa MasterCard Amex Maestro You have to choose one or it stays red. I have tried the codes you listed, but it keeps saying the card number is wrong. I have also tried some of credit card generator. I will have a go with the method you mention although it looks like you can only add US apps with that method. It also appears that you can enter a gift card number, but that is in addition to your credit card number. Have you tried the method described here? You should get the option to select no payment details which will allow you as a school to use iTunes Gift Cards to purchase apps from the store.

Thanks for your post again, but it is no different even on iTunes. I put in my account details and it says I must review account and then shows: They must have changed it from when you last did it.

No credit card or gift card required. http://i.imgur.com/iIwAG.png Start at the "Creating The Account" section and make sure you have selected the UK iTunes Store (not the US).

What you have to do to set up a non credit card account is Firstly, find an app that is FOC that you want to download, then When iTunes asks you to set up an account, the option for "none' as payment method appears, click that and you are set up with a non credit card account. You have to be a bit careful when using gift cards to set up accounts, yes this also works BUT You can not use gift cards to "gift" apps to other people, of you try this iTunes will ask you for a credit or debit card or will charge your card if you have one attached to that account. 1

It seems for some reason, the account I had pre-created just would not work, it just kept asking for card details even though it was a UK account etc. I have created a new account and don't have to put anything about payment details. Perfect!

I just found this out the other day after trying to gift apps to some kids for use on their iPads. I couldn't find any documentation on iTunes or Apple's web site about this. Apple's help was "sorry, you can't. Have I solved your problem?". a real pain when my account is in credit but I still have to pay by credit card. What is annoying is that some kids are about 30c short in getting all their apps using a gift card we gave them (one of the apps increased in cost after our list was made) and there is no way to give the kids any less than $20.
ChrisJ Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Just worth noting that if in iTunes you try to buy a free app before you create your account, it then lets you create an account without a payment option. You do not get this option if you go via the create Apple ID option, you need a form of payment. Odd, but it worked for me 1
