rad Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 I have an RM desktop with i5 that ran out of warranty (just over a year ago) I know it has a dead motherboard as the PSU is fine and it wont boot, it doesnt power up at all. How can I work out what motherboard is compatible for this or whether another motherboard I have will work with it. Will any motherboard work with this processor? (I suppose not)

Remove from the case and do a bench test with nothing plugged in apart from a stick of known working memory. I don't think RM make or get boards custom made, it should have a manufacturers name and model on somewhere. 1
Dos_Box Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 If it does have a custom BIOS (never had to deal with RM kit) you may be able to get it replaced by ordering a new part direct from them as they assemble all of their own computers here in the UK and may have the stocks readily available. 1

I've had a few laptops like this where the usb port has been damaged by users attempting to ram a usb connector in the wrong way around and when they pull it out half the port comes out leaving copper or metal pins being bent and touching the edge or sides of the usb port thus shorting it out ( as stated above ). Check the pin configuration of the cpu ie LGA1155 and then work backwards from there, if it doesn't state on the CPU anything in relation to that you could or should be able to search for the exact model number of the cpu and establish which cpu it is exactly and then work your way backwards with regards to what motherboards have that type of ZIF connector for the cpu Seeing as it has ran out of warranty not sure how much they will charge to get the motherboard replaced but may be worth while checking, if it works out more expensive then get your own motherboard..... chazzy2501 Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Have you checked the power button. Some times they get stuck in the inpostition. Sometimes get pushed back so they don't work at all. disconnect it and short the pins on the mainboard. Also the usb check. 1
rad Posted February 23, 2012 Author Posted February 23, 2012 Ah ha, Well thanks all for your advice, It turns out some ICT Ghost had moved the power button connector on the MB. I checked with another PC and low and behold the thing now boots. 1
