Try the bulb first, it is quicker to change and more likely to fail -

I am not familiar with the PLC-XE20 but on the PLC-XE40 when the thermal switch has tripped you get exactly this phenomenon. It is very easy to reset with a screwdriver once the cover has been removed. Assuming of course it isn't the bulb because I think you get the same fault symptom with a blown bulb also. -

These modules support both MS ReadyBoost memory caching and MS ReadyDrive in MS Vista and 7. The first modules were on PCIe which is faster and consumes less power than USB 2.0. The NAND flash used on them is also much faster than what's on your standard USB memory stick. When used with a standard hard disk there are significant performance gains in system bootup, application load, and system resume times. There is also some power saving which lets you run on battery for longer. While there are still some small advantages using Robson over using a hybrid hard drive (HDD with NAND flash cache built in), if you have a SSD there is really no point in fitting one of these. I had a Lenovo T61 for years with a Robson module configured for ReadyBoost use and it never gave any trouble. - edit - forgot to mention - make sure your laptop BIOS has robson support.

Most if not all RM desktops we have use standard intel consumer motherboards with a RM custom BIOS. What is the part number of your dead desktop?

The difference is that with AMT you can connect to the machine even when it is switched off, and you can boot to e.g. windows safe mode, in case Windows isn't working correctly. It runs on a management engine, a second processor, which on the DQ57TM is located in the Q57 chipset.

It won't work on the i3 systems, VPRO needs i5 or i7.

Do you mean i5-760? If so, I would test a couple of different power supplies. Some supplies have a limitation on simultaneous +3.3V and +5V current, others need a minimum draw on all rails to work. Running the mobo outside of the box is also a good idea. Also go over any jumpers on the mobo in case some have fallen out. Try a different - lower power - graphics card. Try a different - older - CPU if possible - in case yours is defective or in case the BIOS version on the mobo isn't aware of the particular i5-760 version you have. The mobo could have been sitting on a shelf since it was released in the beginning of last year with a corresponding old BIOS version, while the CPU could be fresh from the factory.

I second overheating. On desktops I've had this very issue both with overheating graphics cards, and with overheating CPU, the latter has been caused by poor thermal connection between the CPU and the fansink in a number of cases. I've had laptops with bad fans (HP), with heatsinks clogged with dirt (early dells), and with just plainly poor thermal design where prolonged high CPU load causes it (dell studio 1537)

I use VLC in Linux, works perfectly. If you are using it in Windows, make sure your firewall software isn't blocking it.

Am using or have used linux on most if not all of the different T4x and T6x machines. You will get hardware accelerated X on those with Intel graphics and I think also on those with ATI graphics. Speaking of which the T43 in your list has that dreaded ATI chip - are you sure it isn't a T43p? In my experience external graphics chips on this and other laptops are best avoided if reliability is your main aim.

I have had several T4x and T6x series laptops. Many of them (mostly T4x) developed backlight problems after 3-4 years. One of them was a T41p and I also had a T60p, both of these developed bad solder joints under the ATI graphics chip. The backlight is relatively easy to change, but the graphics chip issue requires a main board change which is not feasible when the warranty is out. I have had several fan failures but only on the T40 type. Fans are also relatively easy to change. I have had countless hard disk crashes on all of them. The T60p I had was IBM branded, T61s are Lenovo branded. None of your choices are p models so you won't see the solder joint issue. I would go for the T60 as it is both newer and faster. Another advantage with the T60 is that it uses SATA drives as opposed to PATA in the T43, then you can get a SSD drive when the hard disk goes - it will drastically speed up your boot time and reliability - and it generates less heat. /Gurra

It's all a question of cost. Sometimes it can be cheaper to add an external low cost dual head graphics card than to buy an external powered splitter due to the price of the latter. The advantage then is that you can then use both mirroring and extended desktop modes. With extended desktop you have the advantage of teachers being able to show a video on the projector while working on something else on the screen. Then again, it adds a level of technical complexity for the teachers so it's not for everyone. Again, if you have a newer Intel chipset, and if you're lucky and your computer vendor has got their system BIOS configured correctly you can save even more by using an ADD2 card such as this one: Low Profile Silicon Image Orion ADD2-N DVI add-in Card on eBay (end time 27-Jun-10 21:43:57 BST). The ADD2 cards take advantage of the fact that most if not all Intel chipsets are dual head, and simply convert the secondary digital video interface signals in the PEG interface to DVI using a cheap video transmitter. VGA versions are available but they are more uncommon and require more expensive components to build.

There may be, depending on what graphics card you have. Having said that, I don't have any experience with passive splitters, we only use DVI-I to DVI-A + VGA splitters. If this is your issue and you have Intel 900 series or newer graphics (9xx, 3, 4 and 5 series chipsets), the later Intel graphics drivers support hardcoding of display resolution. Then the driver does not use EDID information from your monitor(s). In theory this could fix your isse. But it also depends on how the Y cable is wired. Have you seen it working on any VGA interface? /Gurra
