Network View Alternative?

Hi folks,

 

I'm trying to find a cheap alternative to Network View Network management, network discovery, SNMP, MIB and WMI browsers, NetBIOS and port scanner US$79

 

The price of Network View is fine, but we're looking for something that shows more items on screen (around 70 items).

The Dude looks great. Only problem is (a) I let it scan an IP range, but after scanning it doesn't show any devices on the network map and (b) I've added one server manually with ping, and it says it can't ping it. Yet I can ping the server without issue from command prompt.

 

Any ideas?

spiceworks needs some tweaking but able to drill down into most devices

Spiceworks might be a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut, as I just need a very basic ping-able display of around 70 devices.

 

Network View is great, in that you simply (albeit manually) add each device, but there's no way to control the layout. Hence the devices spill beyond one screen, which makes the immediate visibility of the network impossible.

 

(I'm wondering if we would have been better using Spiceworks as our helpdesk system, but there was another one already part implemented here when I joined)

If you simply need a basic ping devices product them Free ping-based network monitoring tool is rather good. Basic and simple one configured it will ping devices with a traffic light type display. ie red is down green is up and orange is long ping time. It can also be configured to email if a device cannot be contacted

Peer Monitor's just a little too simple I'm afraid. I need to show 70 items onscreen.

 

Angry IP scanner unfortunately can only scan a range, whereas I need to only show specific items.

 

Three basic requirements: (1) that it pings and shows status (2) it can show 70 items onscreen, specifically in a 1366 x 768 resolution and (3) it's a list of items that I can populate manually, as I don't want to list all items within a certain range.

Hmm. Have you ticked the 'Reliable' box on the scan dialog and set the recusive hops so as to allow it to route through switches and other devices (if required)?

Manually add each host into the text file and it will show you using different icons if its online, offline etc

 

Can edit the value with regards to it pinging the list of hosts every x amount of seconds ( 1000 = 1 second in the code )

No, hadn't done that. Trying it now, and that seems to have solved the scanning issue.

 

I only want to scan the range from 10.121.244.1 to 10.121.244.255. Any way of restricting just to that? It seems to be finding everything on 10.121.*, despite having 10.121.244.0 in the search box

And I don't suppose I can force it to add *just* the ping tool to all devices it scans?

 

That would replicate my requirement (I can easily delete the devices I don't want to scan).

Thanks. I will have to turn off autodiscovery anyway, because it then is finding other devices within 10.121.244.* that aren't relevant.

 

So it will require a bit of setup, but this looks like the best option

This will do - with a bit of tweaking to the PHP for the display you could easily put 70 devices on one screen

I use cacti for all my switch monitoring and its great. I also use Linux Syslog server that outputs to a web interface.

I've added this as 10.121.244.0/24, although there are certain devices I don't want shown. When I go back into Discover though it resets the SNM back to 10.121.244.0/22, which is grabbing way too many devices.

 

If I delete devices from the display will they get redetected?

OK, I've found the way to remove automatic scanning. That's under Networks Maps > Local. Then from the toolbar click Settings > and on the General tab it lists all the networks that are being automatically scanned. I've removed all those.

 

I've also removed all tools but ping, and set ping only to work with TCP port 80. Other types of ping seem to fail.

 

Now it seems to be working and I can manually add devices...
