Is it possible to setup live@ / office 365 without dns or mx changes.

I have a school that would like to use office 365 only. they do not need email or SharePoint etc.

 

Is it possible to set up Office 365 using the schools domain but not change MX or DNS settings?

For a number of reasons.

 

1.They do not have dns control the LA does and they charge a few hundred to do the changes.

 

2. They don't want email or domain changes. With Google Apps you can setup everything docs, websites etc using the school domain but without changing dns settings. In Google apps control panel you can setup redirection to domains or DNS changes, its your choice.

 

Is my original question possible?

In order to prove you own the domain at least on live@edu you have to make dns changes.

How do they justify the charge for a 2 minute job that's free from most providers?

For them its more than a 2 min job. The job has to be approved, Then they normally fudge the work and then you log another job to get it fixed. Last time I get a port changed it took 6 weeks.

Move providers.

Hosting DNS is really simple and cheap. We used to have to go through LA and have the same issues as you. so we decided to host somewhere else. Your not obliged to use the LA hosting solution, any more than you are obliged to use their web hosting. You could even host it yourself.

Simple solution, go to Nominet and force a TAG transfer from them, it costs peanuts to go elsewhere, probably less than the change fee, thus you pay Nominet £10 to get your domain from the LA and they cannot stop it as your school is the legal owner of it and then you point it anywhere you like job done Not the nicest way of doing it but in some cases much needed

RM changed ours after we provided a TAG - it was actually one of the most efficient things RM have done for us.

In short, no. You need to prove not only that you're eligible for the service as an academic institution (this is done automatically for certain TLDs) but also that you're the legitimate owner of the domain. This must be done for each domain you want to register, but it only needs to be done once.

But surely if we hold a sch.uk domain and can add files to our webspace and reply to emails sent to the school is this not enough for MS.
