Too Many Files Open for Sharing

We are running all Windows 7 machines. Domain Controllers are on 2008 R2 schema, schema master is 2003 DC but the schema is correct version (version 42 from memory(stand corrected 47))

 

Had a strange problem with Serif PhotoPlus X5 to day. The application could not create it's version specific application Data folder for a student. This is the second time we have had this issue, the other time it was a staff member.

 

Users have full permission to the app data folder as Serif Recommend.

 

When the staff member had the issue I just created the folder for them in the correct place under their login just to make sure they had correct permissions i.e. \\servername.domainname.whatever\sharename\%username%\application data\serif\photoplus\15. After creating the folder we then deleted the folder re-opened serif and it created the folder itself no problem and the user hasn't had any issue so far.

 

When I tried creating the folder the same way with the student logged in It came up with this error 'Too Many Files Open for Sharing'. In the end I created the folder in the folder directly below and moved it to the correct place. Serif Draw then opened without issue.

 

As it's such an intermitent fault it's quite hard to diagnose. We also have the issue that we have 2 versions of PhotoPlus on the machines

 

Pretty sure somewhere that I have read that server 2008 has problems with redirecting app data and wondering are any people having issues with certain bits of software.

The 2008 R2 schema should be 47. You can verify this in the registry:

 

HKLM\system\CurrentControlSet\services\NTDS\Parameters

 

The schema master can still be a 2003 DC, but with 2008 R2 DC's in the domain it must be 47.

 

You're right, some applications don't like a redirected AppData folder. You could stop redirecting it, so it's part of the roaming profile itself, or local profiles (depending how your network is set up).

Remember UNC paths have a limit to how far you can browse. I would shorten the appdata redirect anyway as it will cause issues with Adobe too.

e.g. \\servername\sharename\%userna me%\appdata\

Keep it as short as possible tbh to prevent future issues.

Yep was System Schema Version 47. May think about not redirecting the apps as suggested and see what happens. Trouble with intermitent faults you don't know wether you fixed or not :-S. Problem has only occured twice since Sept 2011, we have local profiles here.
