Is it possible to install the main Discover DB in a VM?

I don't see why not. A standard Windows 2003 / 2008 and Microsoft SQL Server box will take the Discover DB without an issue. I am creating a VM of our SIMS server over half term and our Discover DB resides on the same server so I can let you know for definite if you can wait a week or so.

We run it on the same VM as our Sims server.

 

I doubt the client would work that well though

Depends how you are connecting to it - just think it would be rather laggy (its bad enough as it is on a I3 Desktop/SSD/4Gb ram/Nvidia 1gb Graphics card)

You said you run it on the same vm as sims. How is that working out for you? How much resources are you giving the vm? I take it your client is on the i3 desktop?

Same server as the sims db - its got loads of ram (20gb) and 6 cores (mainly because we can!) The db is the find part and the client is a pita - plus its rubbish in how it does things

No, that would be wrong. Look on SupportNet at the post re: Autumn release - I think it's resource id is 18614

We have a number of full test SIMS environments (SQL, DMS, SIMS DB, FMS DB, Discover Server & Client etc) on a couple of VM's and they run fine. Obviously the eye candy side of Discover (smooth rotation of windows, adding large numbers of fields to generate graphs etc) is not the smoothest experience, but it's not unusable by any means.

Discover is on the same VM as our main SIMS dB wether it is a physical box or a VM so long as it is beefy enough for SIMS it will run Discover.

I have built the VM. Our SIMS is on a physical Server. I have installed SQL 2008 Express on the VM and called the instance disc2008.

I am running the Discover Installer and it asks where to install the Discover database. Thats fine but then it asks me where my SIMS server is. I put in the details (with trusted authentication - as the installation manual tells me) but it tells me there was a problem connecting or finding my SIMS database.

There doesnt seem to be much help in the manual about installing Discover on a different server to the SIMS. I have raised a ticket on Supportnet asking for advice but havent heard anything yet.

Anyone got any ideas how I can get it to talk to the SIMS server?

They are extra steps as it doesn't share the same master database, pretty sure it's all in the manual. Might be something in the centrally hosted or some rubbish bit however.

Sims DB and Discover DB on same VM server and so far no problem, have only 10 clients utilizing it at once, seems to be very quick and looks really cool.

 

Using Xenserver in Pool of 3 hosts.
