Hi doing some work for a course but have a question which requires me to use the I.P Adress 2011:5555:5555:1::5 . Now with my maths this should be 2011:5555:5555:1000:0000:5000 which just isnt long enough. What am I doing wrong? gonna kick myself I know!

In IPv6 Notation:

 

“The use of “::” indicates one or more zeros.” so the address expands to:

 

2011:5555:5555:1:0:0:0:5

 

So just fill the address with zeros until you reach the correct number of bits.

When we write: 1:5: its definitively means: 0001:0005: but in the case given in original question "2011:5555:5555:1::5" , double colon only replace consecutive zeros ,so here full IP address would be "2011:5555:5555:1000:0000:0000:0000:0005"

Our new 2008 R2 Standard server has IPv6 set up on it by default, but this is not configured properly. .

 

I am reciving error messages saying that the IPv6 network adaptors on the server should be set to static IP adresses (as they are with IPv4).

 

What would be the reccomended settings, or can we just disable it althogether?

 

(Our IPv4 adresses are 192.168.0.2 for the LAN, and 192.168.0.30 for the internet connection. The router is 192.168.0.1)

Disable it.

IPV6 is useful for internet addresses but as your using NAT your never going to run out so it isn't really worth bothering with.

Well that was quick and decisive! Thank you. I guess it is easy enough to re-enable it if we ever needed it for some bizarre reason. :rolleyes:

This should be 2011:5555:5555:0001:0000:0000:0000:0005.

I agree, you should disable IPv6 on 2008 R2. I suppose eventually you could use it internally, but it's more suitable for the continuous growing number of websites or internet connections to end customers. This is where DNS will help even more, without the user required to remember even longer strings of numbers.

You may want to read this and this before deciding to disable IPv6. The recommended setting is to leave it enabled.

Just to clarify, I meant disabling IPv6 on DHCP Server, not disabling IPv6 on the NIC itself, which I do leave alone. I presume this is OK Arthur?

Just for certain services and at least their IP6 stack worked unlike the Apple one which blackholed connections for quite some time if a site had a AAAA record and no native external IP6 was around. Its OS stuffups like this and dirty little APs that crash when exposed to IP6 traffic that have given many places all the excuses they have needed to hold it back this long.
