Device Name Discovery for Apple

Hello,

 

Can anyone shed any light on the best way to determine the device name of Apple devices connected to the network? In my network sweeps with nMap, LanSpy, and Colasoft I am able to see the iPods, iPhones, etc out there and obtain their mac address but I'd like to grab their device name as well in an effort to locate the student whom it may belong to.

 

I've scoured google and tried various apps but nothing seems to spit out the info I'm looking for. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If the devices are picking up IP from Microsoft DHCP server you should see device name in the DHCP console on the server. If you have a seperate wireless for guest devices you could try and look at the DHCP server on that to see if it tell you device names. Most consumer devices will give a device name of connected devices.

Yeah, even on the MS DHCP server they are showing up without a host/device name. This is true of Apple and Android devices.

I have an app called "inet" that scans our network and seems to find ipods and iphones etc and displays ip address and mac... just use the network scanner feature, leave it to scan and it just gives you a list back. might take some time to go down the list depending on how many ip's you have in your range though.

Is that application only for ios devices? Seems like it from what I googled. Sounds like a great solution but I'm running Windows and my phone is a Droid.

yeah It is just for IOS device I think. Have you tried "screaming net tools" app for android devices. does "ping -a " just return the name from the DHCP list?

The other thing is am wondering if apple have used a particular brand of network cards in the devices ie iphone / ipod and mac range as all of the same make of NIC's start with the same first six ( I belive ) digits, just a thought that may or may not help

Apple has a long range of MAC ID's assigned to them so unfortunately there's no way to block all of those that's not super tedious. The FastResolver program did find a couple of devices I wasn't seeing in nMap and LanSpy so that is a bonus. Thanks for the info on that.

np ref fast resolver, can't you use the dhcp snap in which should show at said point in time anything that is assigned an ip address along with its mac address and host name ?
