I need to look at a new one, one which has a processor and no over heating issues when playing a decent game. I have a top expensive graphics card and a new powerful PSU which I would like to keep (can't remember exactly what). I was looking at the i7 processor I believe which looked powerful enough.

mostly school/office work, but also a little gaming/online when i have time. My current pc is 4 years old so would look to replace whole thing. would like to get something that i wouldnt need to replace for a couple of years

+1 for ebuyer, I had a good shop around and they had hard to beat prices and got free next day delivery.

I bought-asus m5a78l-m/usb3 motherboard,phenom x4 960t,8gb ddr3,60gb ssd,1tb hdd,fractal r3 case,arctic cpu cooler, didn't get gpu as don't play games and mobo has vga,dvi and hdmi to connect to tv via hdmi and use xbmc.

Current cream of the crop for gaming is the Core i5 2500K. Core i7 in Sandy Bridge won't give you enough of a performance boost for the extra outlay, and SB-E is silly money. So:

 

Core i5 2500K

Z68 or P67 motherboard (big range on prices for these)

8GB+ DDR3 1866MHz RAM

Graphics card - wait! ATI 7950 is out very shortly, this may be the answer on your budget. Not silly money like the 7950!

PSU - branded, 650W plus.

Sound card if you have change, somthing like an Asus Xonar perhaps.
