Selling Virtualisation to SLT

Hi Guys,

 

Just wondering if anyone that has a virtual network could answer these questions:

 

1. We currently renew our physical servers every 3 years. How often would you need to (or do you) renew your virtual setup and is it just the hypervisor servers you would renew or the SAN aswell.

 

2. Do you keep your PC's longer than three years on your virtual network?

1. Our current plan is for our VM Servers to last at least 4-5 years with a mid life upgrade somewhere in the mix. We don't have a SAN - only use local storage (SSD and HDD).

 

2. We use thin clients and have the intent of those still being useful in 4-6 years time but don't see how using virtual servers would affect the life time of a normal desktop PC.

1) Depends on how much room you leave to expand in the first place I'd say, If you only get 1 machine that just fits everything in, It'll not last as long, If you have 2-3 machines with spare space, that can auto-take over should another server fail/fill up etc they'll last longer.

 

2) Depends if you're talking about VDI/Thinclients, or Virtual servers? If it's virtual servers, doesn't really affect PC life at all, if you're talking VDI another thing completly.
