hi all does anyone use hp open view or has seen it used that can offer pro's cons usefull ness etc, we are having a new school built and have been asked have we considered it? i always thought it was very pricey and there were lots of other opesiurce alternatives that did most of what it can do.

any advice or pointers please

Same as Geoff - there is no reason to spend money on a proprietary system when such a good set of open source tools exists - I would also agree that nagios and cacti are better than OpenView also.

You guys got any links to some helpful setup guides for Nagios/Cacti and HP switches?

 

We use an HP 5308xl Core switch with various HP ProCurve models hanging off it, then some old Ciscos off those. We only have Windows 2003 Enterprise servers but am willing if necessary to have this on an old basic machine running some Linux is it's not complicated to work.

 

I once had a look at Cacti before but couldn't get it working in an afternoon and gave up lol. Would like to give it a more serious try though.

The wiki will soon have a series of guides for setting these things up so that you can get the most out of them. You really need to understand what is going on and how the different checks work so that you can glean the maximum from them.

 

BTW - I'm another OpenSource fan. I currently use Nagios and MRTG but will be swapping MRTG for Cacti when I get a few minutes spare.
