Hi all,

Our Deputy Head, who is also head of SEN, wants to provide a student with a laptop to take home and use. She asked me if I had any spare ones which I haven't so she wants to buy a new one.

What are the licensing issues if there are any, to installing software that is licensed to the school on laptops that are being taken home by students?

Thanks

Sean

In theory it should be no different from laptops taken home by staff, but it will depend on the individual licence. Some 'site licences' are specific about a single physical site, while others are actually more of an 'organisation licence'.

You need to check your MS License terms as EES has a specific student option which you need to use if your laptop is assigned to a student full time. We had to use this option for our Sixth Form Laptops as they are assigned to a specific student thus not covered like ones assigned to teachers or left in trolleys for anyone to use.

Here's some info from the EES Program Guide:

"The EES Student Option provides a convenient and cost-effective way for you to license selected products for use by your students on a personally-owned device or an institution-owned device assigned to the student’s exclusive use (i.e., a device checked out to a student for the school year). If you choose the three-year subscription, each anniversary order must include at least the same number of student users as in the year 1 order."

Note: re forum post on RDS CALs - these are excluded.
