Hi,

Can anyone advice on what RAM to get for a HP ProLiant DL 380 G6 server ?

Wondering what other people use in their servers? ECC? Buffered?

I have @Millgate waiting for me to say what RAM I want to buy, but struggling to pick. Want to to get 4gb DIMS and according to the server specs they need to be 1333mhz. I cant seem to find out if the server uses double or triple channel and a little unsure if this effects what RAM I can buy?

Also, do you buy specifically labelled server ram for your servers or standard desktop ram? Server RAM is 2 or 3 times more expensive, but I guess that's because it has ECC and buffered.

Thanks

Most of these machines simply won't run with desktop RAM - it needs to be ECC, Fully Buffered and Registered in many cases. That raises the price to eye-watering levels, but you wouldn't put a Ford Transit gearbox in a Ferrari F430...

If your server is mission critical, don't cut corners on memory, stick with top brands approved for use with the server you have. You could check with the HP website or use the memory configurator on a site such as crucial.com/uk & get an idea of what is recommended.

Some of the entry level HP servers will run with non-ECC memory (ML110, Microserver) and you could get away with using this for a testbed but inadvisable for production.
