synaesthesia Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Hi Folks, Anyone else using The Dude for topologies/network maps? Just been playing with it and it looks fantastic. However one gripe - whatever we try, we can't get rid of those poxy "cloud" things - i.e. it's separating the network unnecessarily into subnets (they're not!) So for instance we want to scan 192.168.1.0/24 but it always does 192.168.0.0/22 as well and adds an absolute shedload of rubbish to the map! All we want to see is what links to what switch, NOT what hardware is on the same subnet! It's obviously possible because you can see what links each device, what ports etc... or is this some sort of massive oversight? We've played with the trials of D-View and Ipswitch What's Connected (expensive and oh my god, how much??) which can do it rather well but The Dude looks better, looks more functional than both but just this one niggle... Perhaps it's just something they didn't think of. Trying Spiceworks now - neither me or NM have used this for a few years!

synaesthesia Posted December 2, 2011 Author Posted December 2, 2011 Yes but that'd require big reworking - we just need to see a topology of the switches, and remove the whole idea of subnets or segregation which shouldn't even exist. Wondering if different default gateways (which shouldn't be necessary) on some units have an effect.

I ran in to the same problem you're having; fixing it took some time, but was very worthwhile. It's those little cloud bits. Ok so they're submaps. But why are they there at all? SDC : That document is fantastic and oddly enough something I will be working towards before Christmas and before getting our new switches in so we can configure it the best we can. However to get it that "tidy" in the first place I can only assume there's someting obvious we are missing or you've just added everything in manually. I've stopped it looking for any services, and only told it to worry about switches/routers yet we're left with this quagmire!

Need to look up "recursive" because each time I did a scan I enabled recursive scanning so it picks up every net connected to every device. Plonker.
