Using Discover for the first time, I've created some Discover aspects. However, after logging in to the configuration utility and clicking "Transfer", the system hangs with the message "Transfer requested - waiting for service". I've left it going all day, but nothing has happened.

What am I doing wrong?

Try Stopping and then re-starting each of the Discover Services.

It may say that the Services are running but, at first install, they may not actually be.

Check the logs - details in the manual. We found we had set it as the network service (which is the default\recommend), which doesn't exist in Windows Server 2003\XP (doh!) so the service account and SIMS user needs changing to SYSTEM.

I've got Discover installed on a load of XP machines which don't have any issues doing the transfer with it using 'Network Service' So that is not the issue necessarily. I have had this issue in 2 different schools now and the transfer refuses to happen with any of the settings.... A Mystery.

Hi guys,

I've just installed discover and am struggling with getting the data to transfer. It has now been saying "Transfer Started" for about 4 hours, which I don't think is right somehow.

I've looked for the transfer log file, but can't find it in app data. We're still on Server 2003. Any ideas?

Cheers,

Pete

I was using the Discover Spring 2011 which was giving me the problem I've since used the Discover Autumn 2011 without an issue so far. The schools I had the issues with were all running 7.142 so I suppose it might make sense. I haven't tried it again on one that's previously failed yet.

I have sent a log file to Capita and they replied with:

Thank you for sending in your log file. Please ensure that the versions of SIMS Discover and SIMS.net match, e.g. both are Autumn 2011 release. We do not test all permutations of versions and therefore do not support mismatched installations as we cannot guarantee that they will work.

If you require the installer for Discover, the installation for Discover Autumn 2011 is currently available for download via the following URL;

Delete the url and the password muppet before Capita makes into Capita pens. (If Capita are reading this, I need a new pen please as nasty people keep stealing mine).

Right, found the the log file. I was looking for a "transfer" log file. But it is within the Discover.Warehouse.Service.log.

Now I get the message, "Transfer failed! See log file for details".

Getting an error with extra data?!

There was an error transferring the data between the SIMS and Discover databases! at Discover.Warehouse.TransferAgent.Transferor.TryExecute()

Which version of Sims are you running and which version of Discover are you installing??

SIMS 7.142

Discover 7.138.1.2

Try using DiscoverAutumn2011-7142.zip off Capita then. As I said above it solved my issues and I had exactly the same error as you got.

I had similar issue....altered the timeout to values ="1500" in the Program Files...\SIMS...\Discover Services...Discover.Warehouse.Service.exe.config - this worked for me!

Your right Superade. I had that too.

Ah yes. I did read that.

Could you possibly PM me the link?

Cheers,

Like SOLUS2, discover has the tendency to drop a log file where ever it wants to dependant on the account used by the services. After so many issues running the transfer services as Network Service, we now install it in schools and use the system account. Log files can 75% of the time be found in c:\documents and settings\default user\local settings\application data\discover, c:\windows\serviceprofiels\local system\local settings\application data, or randomly, in the user directory of who you installed discover as! We've also found that If UAC is on, discover in most instances won't create a log. Disable UAC, reboot and hopefully one will appear. Failing that, change the discover services to run with a user account and one should pop up in the My Documnets area.

As for transfer timeouts, check the SIMS log file. We've seen sites where the database slipped into full recovery mode and the log file is a monster. Put the DB back into simple mode and apply the reindex patch, this usually helps the transfer start working. The same for the discover log file too, sometimes it can grow to a huge size and seems to impact the transfer.

Setting the timeout period to 30 mins helps with bigger schools.

Just had this problem as well, and it was simply that we didnt have the latest version of Discover installed.

Rolled out the summer release server and client and the data sync is working again.

Capita do like to over-engineer things sometimes grrrr...
