I don't know about you, but since EduGeek isn't just for people who worked in education (at least not any more), I would put it in the same group as other IT forums like Ars Technica etc. which are definitely much bigger.

I would be interested in case there is anything I could learn form it for the forums I run. Its ok saying 'make sure they are up to date' but some times it can be a setting that you have just forgotten about that gives a security hole. Not after a 'blow by blow' but anything that could help make my forums more secure.

There is some good guidance from the ICO about what to do in a data breach, and IIRC there is information in the Diploma / Certificate in School Business Management. I'll try to collate a group of links together over the next few days and grab a couple of examples. Every issue is slightly different but there are some common themes. I'll prod that Mr Newton too as I know he has info as well ;)

I haven't seen an increase of spam in my inbox and since this one goes to only a few places outside of work, I can't see any sign it's been compromised in the hack. In fact, when Steam was hacked at the same time I was pretty confident both sites had handled it well. They know to encrypt and salt passwords giving us plenty of time to change them before they are broken.

 

Given this site is well known by Steam forum users thanks to the compatability mode thread and both use vBulletin, no surprise EG became a target.

Hmm how should i feel about the fact i had a conversation with the "Hacker".....at least he apologised to me lol!
