GPP - Deploying Printers to users with roaming profiles - Huge build up of printers!

I am just switching to GPP for my users mapped drives and printers...

 

When a staff user with a roaming profile moves around the school they get a build up of printers in their profile from each room they visit. Has anyone who has successfully deployed printers with GPP found a way around this??

Yes. Use the option to set the printers as "Replace" and "Remove when no longer applied". You can also create a "Delete All" item...

+1 - I normally get around this with a Delete All being the first GPP applied

Same here. Add a delete all as the 1st printer preference and this will clear the list before adding any printers

I have this working well for students and staff using desktops which have fixed locations. But how do people cater for staff with laptops that move around the school? If a member of staff moves from the Staffroom to an IT suite and wants to print from their laptop, what options do we have for connecting the IT suite printer, making it default, and removing the staffroom one?

This was really my question..

If i set it to delete then staff will need to keep re-adding their odd printers.

erm, cover staff who travel around the school doing different lessons each day or ICT teachers who will log on anywhere is the school but want to print to their office.

I guess if they ask then GPP can install based on username/ou

Yes, printers can be set by many different things with targeting.

I have my "Order 1" GPP set to "Delete all" but then filtered this to computers must be in "PCs_School" OU (so it doesn't affect laptops)

All other printers are set to update.

 

Does this sound right please?

I have two final problems that I am struggling with.

One Shared printer when I try and select it from the list it always crashes the MMC.

Also, when i try to target two other printers to the OU (Win_Vista_PCs) containing our windows vista PC, MMC crashes with the following error:

 

 

I have had to get around this by targeting the netbios name and adding in each computer name with an OR filter.

Right ive found a bug....

 

If you attempt to map a printer or target any OU that contains the charactor "/" it crashes the MMC..

Eg. "Maths/ICT Printer" or "PCs_Dance/Drama"

Very old thread, but I was setting up a new network when I came across this issue, and found this thread. I dislike relying on scripts, and in the end I've stumbled across my own solution so thought I'd share: deploying printers via group policy targeted at Computer Configuration, and having a GPP in User Configuration to Delete all shared printers. The (Computer Config) policy overrides the (User Config) preference to delete the shared printers, but only when the printer's policy is applied to the machine.. so the preference only deletes the "sticky" printers when a user logs in. Seems to be working so far.. *fingers crossed*
