Is anyone using Discover?

 

We are but are having trouble when creating our 5A*-C Venn diagram to show that some courses are (currently) worth more than 1 GCSE.

 

Has anyone managed to overcome or workaround this in Discover?

Out of curiosity, how are you calculating the 5 A*-C data for Discover?

 

I couldn't see a way of getting any of the Discover aspects giving me anything more accurate than a True/False, so resorted to calculating a 5A*-C column myself and just letting Discover gather the relevant students from that

I have managed to get around this.

 

You need to create 3 Discover aspects, 1 for the 5A*-Cs one for English and One for Maths.

 

You then select a grade set for it to look at, ie GCSE Results or BTEC Results, then you can set how many that is worth and select your aspects. The problem comes down to if you are using the same gradeset for 2 different values.

 

also make sure that you only select the grades worth C or Above and then set the threshold on the main aspect to 5.0 that way you will only get a T if they have 5 GCSE or evivilents, with the english and maths, leave them as one. then you can import those aspects into the Discover configuration and set your Ven Diagram there.

 

remember to select the result set for where your marks are, if not you will get FALSEs all thr way through

Where are you setting your threshold? Are you using "Multiple Grade Targets" aspects? I can see where you set the equivalent grades but see nothing for threshold on my system

sorry they call it the Equivalence Minimum, it is a type in box, set it a 5.0. Also while I am here, make sure you select your Result Sets you will be taking the grade collections in

OK so if for instance I set the equivalence minimum to 5, then set the equivalent grades to 1 on my grade set, it'll return "true" only if at least 5 grades in my selected range are present?

Brilliant, thanks! If any SIMS devs are reading, I think that "threshold" is a much more appropriate term for this! Also, the manual could do with updating - it tells you how to change the equivalence but doesn't actually explain why you'd want to!

I am always here for translation. We also have a very good local support unit here in kent (EIS) which provided us with excellent training on Discover (at a cost) but it did make all the difference

Well we all know a D1 btec grade is worth one GCSE but a D2 is worth two. Yet we can't set two grade value definitions using the same grade set! A conundrum!!

The only workaround is to use separate gradesets for D1 and D2, which is technically the correct way to do it.

 

Annoyingly, we used to have separate gradesets for each qualification, however with certain subjects changing their mind half way through the year and some subjects having multiple specifications within the same class, we created "catch-all" gradesets last year allowing any grade (separate BTEC type and GCSE type) to be selected and thus reducing the number of AM7 templates we needed to maintain, the downside being we now can't use them with Discover

 

We've resorted to creating a True/False gradeset and populate that via an Excel upload as all our grade analysis is done in Excel anyway. Discover just populates itself from the relevant True/False aspects.

Annoying isn't it? I realy dont understand why they'd create that limitation. Wouldn't be hard for them to program an error message if you mistakenly have two different equivalances applying to the same grade.

I think the fact that the Discover forums on SupportNet are still locked to beta testers is a good insight as to how Capita view Discover right now; it's not really ready for the mass market, I get the impression it's been made available so that those keen folk will start using it and feeding back the problems they find.

but the logic is, if they are doing one level of course, that is a grade set, if you are doing a different level, it is a different gradeset. yes most installtions use the same BTEC/GCSE Gradesets for Single and Double Science, KS4 and KS5 BTECs etc etc.
