Battlefield 3 - The MK2 Review

As always, you can rely on me for a 100% reliable review of everything! :)

So here goes....BF3 single player (PC)

According to the media, BF3 is the Steve Jobs of the gaming world. It will revolutionise gaming, it's the best thing before and since sliced bread, etc, etc.

First look is it is VERY similar storyline/telling wise to Black Ops. The whole "lets lock you up and you tell us a story via flashbacks" thing. Unfortunately with this incarnation I felt very little for the main protagonist. He seemed to have very little charisma and through the interrogation scenes it felt very drawn out.

(Oh and game makers, if you are going to do a cutscene, make the fade quicker! There's nothing worse than seeing a highly emotional cutscene end and then the characters just sit in silence as the screen slowly fades to black!)

It was also difficult to get attached to the other characters they lump in. The jet pilot, made reference briefly in the preceeding interrogation, play a level as her then nothing else mentioned. It felt that they wanted a flying/bomb dropping level and had to shoehorn it in somewhere, even if it didn't fit the storyline of the main character. They could have quite easily put in a bomb dog level where you have to sniff out explosives if they had tried hard enough.

I'm still undecided if I like the "saving at checkpoints" thing a lot of games are doing. It seems to show how much the consoles are taking over the PC games. It's extremely frustrating to get to a certain point and die, then have to play the last few areas again and again just to get up to that point, rather than you getting the chance to save at a point YOU feel might be sticky.

Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the game, but at times it felt like it had all been seen before, and this was just going through the motions.

I still don't get the idea of having massive open areas for the player, yet you take one step outside a predefined area and it tells you that you are leaving the playable area, gives you about three miliseconds to leave then tells you you've failed. If you want to confine the player, use intelligent level design, have something blocking their way, or a minefield, or anything....but don't have a wide open field, then tell me off if I decide to move slightly further away then 3 feet. Dead Island also done this, they'd give you a massive island to explore, yet if you went more than a few feet in the water it would pretty much drown you as punishment (why you'd take a holiday on a paradise island when you can't even get in the water above your waist is beyond me!)

Sound-wise it was OK. I think we've all come to expect realistic gun and war sounds from the various war games. Voice acting was average at best. Again the crumby "good cop/bad cop" act made me a little disinterested in the situation. I also encountered quite a few looped phrases when with squads.

Graphically (let's be honest, the key selling point for BF3) it did look impressive. I wouldn't go as far as stunning or whatever some review sites have gone for. Yes they did go an extra step, but there were still glitches. I noticed grass and plants too close to walls so they swayed through them, blood puddles on the floor looked painted on, enemies spawn magically out of nowhere (not entirely graphical but still).

With the advancement of the graphics from original MoH and CoD games, I think it's about time we visited another war, or re-visited some earlier ones. All the war games now seem to be stuck in a desert area, have a few fields, a CQB level usually in a building, and then other little bits and pieces. Occasionally you will visit places you might know, but chances are you will be back to the desert again. It's like the game makers have a sand fetish!

Perhaps it's time to go with the original D-Day landings again, but in this graphical age.

The game itself did seem short; when I'd completed the final "battle" i did think "is that it?" I was expecting at least a bit of story or something extra, not just what the ending was. I really did enjoy it (honestly, despite how this review seems) but at times I did feel like I was playing through it just to get to the end, rather than playing to find out what happened to the nukes, or what would happen to character X,Y or Z.

One last thing game makers, stop with the whole "let gamers play the last level first, then stop it short, then let them play through it again at the end. First it indicates you are near the end of the game when you reach it, and second it's annoying....it kills a major part of the suspense as a few cutscenes later we learn who the characters are, and can guess to an extent how they end up in that situation rather than not knowing we'd end up in New York at all.

There were other little niggles but I'll overlook them for now.

An enjoyable game but still doesn't have the atmosphere the original MoH/CoD games had.

I agree about single player (I cracked it out on xbox in 3 hours, 4 if you include getting the achievements)...multiplayer however is far superior to BC2, MW2, Black Ops, MOH et al. Reasons why - Frostbite 2 engine - maps that are massive and destructable with shrapnel that can kill you! (I once had a small piece of shrapnel kill me when on very low health), tanks, choppers, jets, IFVs, decent weaponry (Scar-H is the only weapon that will get nerfed), decent unlocks, no prestige system, just go from COL to COL2 COL3 etc (no regaining of weapons etc).

The sp was weak in this incarnation, it lost its unique battlefield feel and was very much on a par with the very poo call of duty games recently, bar cod4 campaign which was actually good! Last years Medal of Honour had the best campaign scince then.

Graphics were not as good as i thought they would be (xbox) even after installing the high res textures.

Sounds to me are very impressive and life like.

I am too am also getting fed up with the modern day scenario, cod waw was shocklingly bad and not played a decent ww2 shooter scince cod3!

Multiplayer is where the game wins hands down though. utterly awesome at times :)

Anyone played it co-op? Sometimes, co-op isa really nice change of pace compared from the whole multi-player thing. ARMAII was good fun for coop. :)

Brothers in Arms was a really enjoyable WWII FPS, however nothing has really as been as epic as the first MOH and COD games. I'd love to see a new WWII FPS game with these newer game engines. Imagine how good the amazing MOH:AA Omaha Beach level would be if remade and put into the BF3 engine! WOW!

My thoughts exactly. The omaha landing of MoH was the first real atmospheric game where it felt like a struggle. it felt tough and was tough.

the modern games feel tough at times but never have the atmosphere the original do.

I also agree with Brothers in Arms. Possibly the best all round WWII game with strategy over run and gun attitude rewarded. Also commanding a squad PROPERLY in single player.

It was a very tactical game which made it great. Running in blindly resulted in you being cut down by an German MG placement! You had to plan ahead. And it was very satisfying when your plans paid off! I also loved the fact that the levels were lovingly copied from old photos, maps, descriptions etc. A lot of care went in to the creation of BiA.

Forgot to give a shout out to what I think was MOH:Airborn? Where your in a plane getting hooked up, then jumping out and parachuting down over Normandy with planes and AA fire all around you! Loved it. :)

Yep, airborne where you had to chute into each level and place yourself out the way of enemy fire. different approach

Co-Op is great, too bad each time I have played I end up with people that only look out for themselves and don't bother with teamwork. None of my XBL friends seem interested in Co-Op at all which is annoying :(

Luckily I have a few mates I play with who all like co-op/team work and we work well together weather it be in a multilayer squad n BC2, or fighting off zombie hordes in L4D2! Plus my private TS server makes things a lot easier. :)

Also remember CO-OP BF gets points to get weapons too :D

I am glad its not wasted time as such and those on PC give me a shout for CO-OP, the heli mission was good fun when I played it.

Battlefield has never been about the single player game (not counting BBC). They did talk about selling BF as a multi only but were bashed in the forums a few years back so have added the single player mode as a side game.

I think it should be only multiplayer as the negative feedback does nothing to help the series, which lets face it is fantastic as an online game.

I have finally mastered the jets and helicopters and can almost go a complete round without getting taken out.
