Old Win98 program move to XP

I have an issue here. I have a very old Win98 machine that is on its last legs. it runs the accounts program SAGE. I have virtualised it using VMware converter then imported it into VirtualBox as a Win98 VM. It works OK but performance is a bit sluggish as it loads all the old crap up as well. I have no discs to re-install SAGE freshly so was thinking of exporting some of the program files off of this VM then setting a new XP based VM with nothing else on except this old SAGE program to improve performance.

 

Any ideas on how this would be done? I've not done Win98 stuff in ages. I think it need to track down all the softwares dependancies then copy the relevant files over? Would this even work?

 

All ideas glady appreciated.

sage used to do cheap educational licences - could you not get a cheap licence for a new version?

I think sage has allot of custom dll's registered. I've moved sage between machines allot and done network setups as well, but i've always had the disk and done fresh installs.

 

win98 should run pretty quick in a virtual box, have you cleaned up the 98 machine?

 

just out of interest - what version of sage are you running?

The sage is really old its that old sage don't even have the disc anymore. What i might do is do a exact replica of the machine for backup in VBox then start to get rid of the bumf that is already installed on the win98 machine and then bump up its ram so it flies.

 

I knew it would be a bugger, i've got the box, serial, license but no disc.

Another thing you could do is try moving the files over it in the virtual environment to a new win98 VM and see what happens. Be interesting to know what happens.

Personally I would save the time and see about getting an updated version - Windows 98 can't last forever and I would love to know how you would go about backing the data up (just one of the many points that you could put across for justifying spending the money to get a newer version).
