as i can gather from the website it filters the application down to what is shown in the title bar

Some of the advantages with blocking at the proxy is that: you only need to install it once, you can also block other websites, you can get user or group level filtering, updates are done to the server - not individual clients, it is not operating system specific, you can allow user owned devices, you don't need to look at sites written in comic sans.
