Hi all,

I have a very strange problem with my network where every computer displays the "duplicate exists" error.

Essentially I can rename a computer from "ICT-2" to something completely unique, such as "ILoveLooting" and it would still throw up the duplicate exists error.

There are 2x domain controllers, one with DCHP and both with DNS (one on 2008 and one on 2008 R2 - 2008 functioning level). Neither server displays DNS or DHCP errors in Event Viewer.

Any help would be very much appreciated, this problem is slowly driving me insane!

Thank you in advance.

Thank you everyone for the swift replies.

Were the machines imaged and if so have they been sysprepped?

Some are, but all machines are displaying the message.

ive had this it was caused by a wifi controller whos name some person had set to be the same as the domain name

Interesting thought, going to look in to that one.

Can you post the exact error?

Is it duplicate ip address or computer?

Ben

Sorry I should have been more precise.

The exact error reads:

Windows - System Error

A duplicate name exists on the network.

We get this all the time on one of our domains, as soon as we add the machines to our main domain the problem goes away. This happens to even newly imaged machines, something in the domain is causing it.
