Email - New domain name help

Hi there,

 

Currently we have a @school.suffolk.sch.uk email address and to be honest we get loads of complaints about it being too much of a mouthful. So as we're going to be making the jump to Live@Edu in the not to distant future I thought now would be the ideal time to change this mouthful to something more managable.

 

So we have a website and we have decided to use that address for our email. This is great but I'm on here to ask what is the best way to have emails sent to @school.suffolk.sch.uk arriving at @newemail.co.uk?

 

I was just thinking that we should leave the current RM EasyMail server up and running and have it forwarding mail to the new inboxes. Then after a period of time (Say 6 months) we close this off?

 

Are there any other more slick/dynamic ways of doing this so that I don't have to have the RM EasyMail server in the equation?

Buy a shorter domain and redirect to the other address. See how you go, shouldn't be too expensive too implement.

Whats your internal mail system? If its exchange you can handle both domains directly.

Internal mail is handled by RM EasyMail

Move the whole lot over to exchange/live@edu (not sure if live@edu gives you the multiple domain names feature) if you can. Much easier in the long run and all mail just troops into the right accounts, old or new. The domain switch is just a single command to change the default domain whenever you want to.

Already got the domain, just need to make it clear as to how to deal with the old domain once mail is setup for the new one.

1. Well I think you know as you've already mentioned this. Configure Exch so it ill accept emails for both. Create a policy with the new smtp domain and stamp all users with this, leave the old one smtp domain for a few months and make sure the new domain is set as the primary so users are ware of it. Update siganatures etc..

Live@edu can handle multiple domains - you could migrate your existing server (@school.county.sch.uk), and add the new domain too. Users would have a primary SMTP address of [email protected], and a second as their old [email protected].

 

Point your MX records in the right direction and off you go!
