Timed Shutdown

I have been asked to find out if we can have all machines shutdown at a certain time every night, say 6pm we are using windows 7 and have been told shutdownertron doesn't work on the system, does this mean that the only way to do it is to use the schedule tasks on windows?

Hi we use this PsShutdown from sysinternals our pc's are XP so i dont know if it works on win 7 might be worth a try

executes from the server and sends a shutdown command to workstations in your txt file list.

Export your computers from AD and past to your txt file

or Powershell scripts. (stop-computer -force -computername "COMPNAME") set as a scheduled task?

 

you can build a list of computers in a text file and use

 

Stop-Computer -force -ComputerName (get-content "Full Path to computer list.txt")

I can tell you, without doubt, that Shutdownertron does work on Windows 7.

 

We have deployed Windows 7 Professional: 64 Bit here. We are using the same Shutdownertron package that we used on XP before the Summer. I know it works because I was logged onto my office station from home when at 6:30 [my scheduled shutdown time for my stations] the Shutdowndertron message came up telling me that the station would shutdown in 5 mins unless I pressed the cancel button.

 

Why not try it? You have nothing to lose.

I can back DaveP withe shutdownertron working on win 7 but it does also say it's not yet supported on this version of o/s.

If you are after a quick solution with little effort then you can use group policy preference to send out a scheduled task to each workstation. If you check the blogs section above, there is a recent post on how set this up.

I tried shutdownerton and a lot of the time it did not work with windows 7. I have had to put a scheduled task into gpo linked to a ou with windows 7 with this site as my starting point How To Automatically Shut Down Your Windows 7 Computer

You can do it via GPO using 2008 R2. This should work with Windows 7, Vista and XP.

 

I like this method as it's quick, easy to setup and easy to edit if needed. You also don't need to keep a list of machine names like many other scripted methods either.

 

For your reference, 32Bit is: %SystemRoot%\System32\Shutdown.exe

 

And 64Bit: %SystemRoot%\SysWOW64\Shutdown.exe so you'll need two policies if you have 32/64Bit machines in a single domain.
