We've got a couple of DL380 G5's which keep randomly rebooting with the event message below - any body any ideas?

no but download/install microsoft windows sdk and you get windbg which you can open the .dmp file with and may give clearer idea of the cause.

Just seen on a site that it could be the nic drivers - have updated and wait to see if that fixes - if not more digging!

 

Its strange its only started to do it its been running for 7 months on 2k8 R2

A d1 error reports to be hardware related (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL) and looking on other forums usually a NIC driver

not with HP drivers and windows ,its quite normal.

 

personally i would virtualize it and vmware handle the hardware. (even if it is only one VM running on it.)

VM the solution is not the worst idea, infact its a very good one, however when the physical machine has issues with the drivers then you will be in shtuck again. Dont let the machine auto update drivers as I found on S2K8R2 that driver updates can cripple the machine until you discover the error and rollback (usually drivers are the last thing to check!) Perhaps look at setting up a VM just to handle driver updates and see how it likes it, if it works, great, patch away, if not, then hold off until issues are fixed with said driver/update

not really you would be using the vmware/linux style drivers for the hardware which are a world of difference from the windows drivers, then windows drivers for the virtual vmware devices, if the machine still has problems then its a hardware problem either faulty or incorrectly configured,

Hyper V then, and as for updates, that wouldnt matter if the VM was running Windows Server

I don't have the san space yet - ordering an additional enclosure next week

Oh and Linux kvm over VMWare or hyper-v.

 

It's happening on 4 separate servers so doubting hardware issue.

 

I'm just about to order 2 x dl360 g7 with dual 6 core xeons and 24gb RAM and 8 network cards to use as hosts to replace my 5 file servers. But as said above I don't have enough space on the san. I'be got to wait till next summer to replace them totally.

you wouldn't need san space, you don't have to run a vm off a san its not mandatory. run it off the same disks the server is using at the moment.

I don't use hyper v - doesn't help when the servers only have 2 72gb drives - yes I could virtulise on themselves but the machines need to replaced anyway as they are 4 years old dl380 g4/5s. I've updated the drivers for both graphics and nics as from my growling this is the main cause of issues.

 

I will be virtulising next year when I get the additional space.

YES, really. Using HyperV in a cluster (which needs shared storage - ie SAN) - your VMs can move between HyperV hosts with no downtime. This is exactly how my system is now setup - and following shenanigans with a UPS, it has been demonstrated a few times in the past week when we loose one! There will be a series of articles published on this soon - so if any one is interested in this area, keep an eye out.

i know what a cluster is, my vmware runs like that. my comment was directed at using hyper-v. for me in negates one of the biggest benefits of virtualization ---> Not letting windows touch the hardware.

Don't worry when Apple release iVirtualize it'll never crash or catch malware/viruses and everything will be in the iCloud
