Hey folks,

Can anyone advocate a good, feature packed ADSL Wireless Router, that support proper VPN passthrough? Last night, i confirmed that my Linksys WAG320N does not properly support VPN passthrough (see below, how I confirmed this), which has had me tearing my hair out for weeks trying to connect to our Smoothwall AF VPN.

I was looking at the Netgear DGND3700 (N600), but reviews are mixed to saty teh least. One feature I like about the DGND3700 is the VPN Gateway to gateway feature which might come in handy.

Anyways, more than happy to read any testimonials anyone has about a good router.

Cheers,

(PS> how I know my current router is interferining with VPN Passthrough... Connected my desktop to my mobile phone via cable, desktop (Win 7 64 Bit) connected to L2TP VPN with no issues, and first time. Using the ADSL connection with teh WAG320N router, the smoothwall reports the following messages when L2TP tries to connect...

23:36:41 	Jays L2TP 	XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX max number of retransmissions (2) reached STATE_MAIN_R1
23:36:45 	Jays L2TP 	XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX max number of retransmissions (2) reached STATE_MAIN_R2
23:36:45 	Jays L2TP 	XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX: deleting connection "conn15" instance with peer XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX {isakmp=#0/ipsec=#0}
23:36:56 Jays L2TP XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX responding to Main Mode from unknown peer XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
23:36:56 	Jays L2TP 	XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX OAKLEY_GROUP 20 not supported. Attribute OAKLEY_GROUP_DESCRIPTION
23:36:56 	Jays L2TP 	XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX OAKLEY_GROUP 19 not supported. Attribute OAKLEY_GROUP_DESCRIPTION
23:36:56 	Jays L2TP 	XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX transition from state STATE_MAIN_R0 to state STATE_MAIN_R1
23:36:56 	Jays L2TP 	XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX STATE_MAIN_R1: sent MR1, expecting MI2
23:36:56 	Jays L2TP 	XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX NAT-Traversal: Result using RFC 3947 (NAT-Traversal): peer is NATed
23:36:56 	Jays L2TP 	XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX transition from state STATE_MAIN_R1 to state STATE_MAIN_R2
23:36:56 	Jays L2TP 	XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX STATE_MAIN_R2: sent MR2, expecting MI3
23:38:06 	Jays L2TP 	XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX max number of retransmissions (2) reached STATE_MAIN_R2
23:38:06 	Jays L2TP 	XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX: deleting connection "conn15" instance with peer XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX {isakmp=#0/ipsec=#0}

From what I can gather, the Linksys WAG320N won't allow the connection to change state, despite having all the neccessary VPN passthrough settings configured. Wireshark doesn't reveal much, and the messages get even more cryptic if I use IPSec! Weird.)

I have a Netgear DGN2000 (ADSL), I have had it replaced a number of times for a known fault buts its a good router, can use it to connect to the VPN using out software with no problems. I bought it due to the features that it had probably would go for another Netgear next time, had 2 Belkin ones (my spare is a Belkin) and a Linksys, they all have their flaws but prefer Netgear. Would go business class next time I think for more reliability and functionality.

Could you not try flashing it with DDWRT? I'm sure it would support VPN pass through better.

What? the WAG320N? DDWRT doesn't support routers with integrated modems :-(

Thanks for all of your feedback folks. As always, very much appreciated.
