pantscat Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Hi all, I'm just starting to look at getting a good network monitoring system setup and one thing that I'd really like is to get SMS alerts. I've looked at Nagios, Paessler, Spiceworks and Foglight NMS and it appears that Foglight NMS will do everything I want it to do, and has enough "endpoint" licences (100) in the free edition to make it very good value for money. i.e. £0. Has anyone setup a similar system and used SMS alerts? What sort of hardware did you use? Ta, Ant
sdc Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 (edited) In some of my previous posts I've discussed how we've configured The Dude to monitor our network servers, switches, etc. We've also configured it to send email/pager notifications, and I can think of a couple of ways that SMS could be integrated - if you'd like some more info, send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you the document on how we've set it all up. Elison Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 @pantscat well, for example, we have one ftp-server to share files. and we set the ftp port monitoring. when you r setting differant types of monitoring you have an option to set the notification or not...you just have to set the telephone number. Here the program sends the sms if ftp server does not reply. thats all for computers we use tcp and icmp monitorings. This program has the trial version...it takes a few minutes to check it out
pantscat Posted October 10, 2011 Author Posted October 10, 2011 @Elison, Sorry I probably wasn't clear. I meant what hardware do you use to send the SMS? do you plug a mobile phone into the server or use some sort of clever doohicky to do it?
pcstru Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Some phone providers offer free email to SMS gateways. The list though is out of date (I can't get uk orange to work for instance). You can also use services like BulkSMS or txtlocal as email to sms - you will pay per text message but the cost isn't prohibitive (well, as long as what your monitoring is sensible and doesn't start generating 1000's of reports every microsecond).

Elison Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 @pantscat There are two ways you can get the sms that is sent by this program. 1. You need the internet. You need to set your telephone number and the number of mail lock in the program. You can find the information ab it from ur provider or in the internet. 2. The easier way is to use the mobile phone. It is plugged to admin’s pc or server, you have to set the mobile’s drivers so the pc and the program can “find” it on the network. Then you can send the test sms to check whether it works or not.
