Were given the following spec:

 

Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit server

12GB Ram

C Drive : 80Gb

E Drive (data) : 300GB

 

VM reporting we are using about 2GB of RAM

We all know at least one school who (if given a list of specs scaled according to the school size) would the pick the cheapest option and then whine on the phone "but you said it would work!"

 

That said, ram is ridiculously cheap these days.

What exactly are you asking us? and i would agree with Pete, ram is cheap, so i wouldn't complain at having 12Gb in a server. Make/model of server, bit more info???

The spec you've been given is more then likely the recommended spec for an SQL server, which it sits on.

 

As it sounds like its a VM I'd imagine how cheap ram is is not the issue but more how well you utilise the ram you have on your host as i imagine you've already maxed out the host.

Sorry we now have Full Virtualised our servers using VM Essentials with 3 hosts, each host has 32Gb so RAM is not a problem ;-)

It just looks like VM is doing it's job well. Is that 2GB average including busy load times?

If you're not using all the allowance, give some to the other VMs, or add another VM to the host. Just bear in mind, as your database grows you'll want a fair amount reserved.
