Got a head interested in my "use a smartphone to replace cameras in primaries idea" :)

Anyone bought a cheap PAYG 'droid and willing to share experiences of it please :)

Hi Si,

As you might remember I had an LG 540

It was about £110 at the time (a year ago) but was an excellent phone for the money. My other half has the Galaxy Ace and is very pleased with it. Personally, i think that the cheap Droids are pretty decent bits of kit. You'll lose a bit because the cam will not be top of the range, but, to be honest, there's not THAT much difference in quality

It's not out yet, but HTC just announced the Explorer that should be out next month - and HTC kit is normally good quality.

I've got a Sony Xperia X10 Mini Pro (bit of a mouthful) that was only £100 PAYG on o2 from Phones4U - pretty small but chunky and solid, you can get a cheaper version without the keyboard (X10 Mini, without the Pro). Both charge from a USB cable so easy to get files off the phone.

Whatever you get, stick Vignette on it so they can apply filters to the camera while they line up the shot (or do it after), and PicSay so they can stick word balloons and other stickers/effects on top after.

Just had a look around the local phone shops and the ALCATEL One Touch 990 at O2 "looked" the nicest.

My main prob is going to trying to find out which ones handle school proxys!

Thats an interesting find - I wonder if Apple's lawyers have sussed that Samsung's knicking another of their ideas? :)

But I think we want them to be phones as well so they can be used on trips.

And we might need a little bit of 3G facility as well if they are used as walkie-talkies at the far end of the field at lunchtime :)
