What is causing this color distortion in my projector?

the first two images are the projector image and the final one is the same screen on my laptop.

as you can see there is extra green in the projector and two unaligned red stripes.

can someone tell me what is wrong?

Have you changed the VGA cable? I get some funky colours when the cables become weak inside ours...

Does it correct itself when you wiggle the cable?

Looks like an input signal problem. This is likely the cable. Or perhaps its expecting YUV and your sending it RGB? Otherwise the projector is toast. Edited September 27, 2011 by Geoff

Try resetting the colours to default on the projector. It can also be created by a bulb on its way out, or excessive heat, however all newer projectors do switch themselves off to prevent damage.

 

Also, if you have a long 10m+ VGA cable, it's important that it's thick (shielded) quality cable otherwise you will get similar problems to what you have.

I've tried switching the cable, and after a longer amount of time the problem gets worse and more rgb stripes being to appear, but on the bright side when that happens the yellow tint goes away and there are some places with pure white.

It just sounds like a faulty bulb from what you're describing.

We've got a similar problem in one of our Science Labs at the moment, having changed the cables, checked the projector bulb life we found that the cause is the video splitter.

That's true actually what Iain mentioned. A powered splitter is the recommended method and not these cheap £2.99 'Y' splitters which never work properly.

this is just a sugestion but it may be worth checking that non of the used vga pins are touching each other or not making contact due to damage i had it where some on tryed to plug the cable in upside down and broke the connector on a 40M length. faling that test all the signaling wires and finaly use the origanal wires with a monitor for example to see if that does the same thing but it definatly seems like a cable/signal fault to me.

Interesting colour effects here are caused by VGA cables not being connected properly. I've had a fetching purple, a pale blue and a bright yellow from this.

 

For the record, we use powered splitters.

HI, OK here is what you do press menu, now look at the colours on the menu are they OK? if the answer is yes then it is the input, it is very rare to have a internal problem of this type so i suspect VGA cable as from the picture you have a colour missing and suspect a broken wire "if" your menu test is OK if it is not OK then the problem is internal and i will help you diagnose further.

I had an issue in the past and diagnosed it down to the actual plate connectors being at fault and not the cables. Hope you get it resolved.

Yep, from my experience a strong colour is cable related. Get up there with a short "normal" cable connected to a laptop and try that... Follow all health and safety rules of course!

If it was red, especially from a corner, it is usually a toasted colour filter. If your projectors have air filters make sure you clean then regularly. Hope this all helps.

Cable, connectors (could be ANYWHERE in the chain) or a duff splitter. NOT the bulb.
