SimpleSi Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 Ok No 2 daughter at Northumbria halls of residence - TV signal diabolical - just about good enough to watch 6 o'clock as long as you don't mind viewing a snowstorm on anlogue (that's with an amplified aerial) - forget getting DTT So, the halls do a "freewire" tv service buts its only live tv so she can't record important tv shows (like X-Factor and Home and Away ) On the way home , i remembered about Slingbox but has anyone used one (or equivalent) or has made their own diy version. If we had that sort of device, she could control the 2nd multiroom Sky box from afar. So anydone it or something equivalent using an old machine and an av capture device? regards Simon PS - this is tres important and urgent
m25man Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 The Slingbox is a great piece of kit and by far the easiest to setup and get working, it comes with everything you need to beam your sky box across the world. There are plenty of imposters but none really have the slick network of sling box.com behind them. The downside is that to get a "good" stream you really need >1mb up on your broadband. WinTV has a Webstreaming app as do most of the the other TV card makers these work great around the house over wifi but as soon as you get to Internet streaming your at the mercy of your ISP and contention ratios. I can assure you having tried them all, the Slingbox Pro takes some beating but all are only as good as your upload speed. 1

featured_spectre Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 I am with geoff on that one...get a proper slingbox...take it with me wherever I go, the mrs loves the fact that we can watch our recorded programs wherever, and my daughter loves it as she can watch mickey mouse or any of the other programs we have on there for her! 1

Dont miss a thing, and can even watch them from the client on my mobile phone. The slowest one is on a virgin media 256k upstream, but even that is plenty watchable. Best devices Ive bought in a long time. 1

If so good luck with the Internet and TV service it was a when my sister was in it, best thing she did not saying in them after the first year! Cost a fortune for Internet and TV and it was naff, although there TV service was ok as it was IPTV via VLC. As for the firewall it was a bugger and sulked at Skype at times and MSN and many other common apps 1
RabbieBurns Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 The client software uses wierd ports (5001 i believe) however you can now just use your web browser to watch. Go to Slingbox - Country Selector and it installs a player addon for your browser (works in both FF and IE) and you can watch using just normal web traffic. Also, it means you dont need to worry about remembering the IP etc of where the slinbox is located! 1

I can't believe that you guys go away from home and even consider watching things that are recorded at home...what's the point of going away! I am assuming that this means you actually leave all the AV gear at home switched on while you are away? ...and I thought the teachers at our school were the least eco aware bunch on the planet... And as for TV at uni...if they can't get a signal then tough...at least it saves them the cost of a TV licence...besides they should be too busy working to need TV... 1

My daughter can't work unless she's watching Americas Next Top Model on TV, Facebook on Laptop and txting on IPhone - all at same time. She got 2 B's and a C so it works for her and its best to keep her happy otherwise the ear-ache..... Si

CESIL Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 My son has just found out that he has a TV aerial point in his room so I shall get him a USB Freeview receiver and that will give him all the channels he is used to at home. I am certainly not letting him access my broadband while he is away...having at last got both sons out of the house I am looking forward to having my bandwidth all to myself for a change!

For me the slingbox is about watching tv on the move, so its normally on a laptop I watch it on. For the odd occasion I do watch it when theres is a TV around, i can just plug the laptop into the tv
