featured_spectre Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 Yesterday my dear daughter (and myself) spilt a small bit of water into my laptop whilst I was trying to pack it away (I knocked it after she put it right in front without realising). Anyways, its spent 24 hours in the airing cupboard...it switches on, but does not do anything at all...no POST, no BIOS, No nothing. Wont even spin the HDD after the initial fire up! Any one got any helpful hints? I am looking at buying the accidental damage insurance from Acer and getting it repaired that way, anybody had experience of something like this? NEVER ever happened to me before so this is a one off I dont want to open it up in case they say it will void the insurance etc. Regards Neph

localzuk Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 A single day drying isn't enough. We had a teacher spill liquid all over their laptop last monday. It was dismantled thoroughly and left to dry for the full week before reassembly and power up. Take it apart and let it dry longer. 1

6Foot2 Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 We had a teacher's laptop that wouldn't start after coffee was spilt on it. Similar to your situation we saw no signs of life after power on [This after thorough drying] We eventually swapped the keyboard. This solved the problem.

Basically it is taken apart now (well as much as I dare!!) and sitting in the airing cupboard drying out. I am using the i7 but the files on there are precious (and thankfully salvagable as the HDD spins up in another laptop!) Currently praying to god I dont have to pay anything out!!

I was not advising to do anything fraudulent regarding buying insurance after the accident - was purely stating it presuming that he may have something like contents cover or insurance of some description.

My brother (a former acer engineer (after a stint in watford electronics) turned IT Network Manager) will be looking at it. He knows the parts like the back of his hand so should be good to go on his advise

featured_spectre Posted September 17, 2011 Author Posted September 17, 2011 She is 2 and was in hospital at the time, she decided to put her water on the bed tray thing (where my laptop was resting so she could watch dvds) and I knocked it over with her drip wire thingy when packing it away...so mainly my fault for not looking...

A few years ago my mother spilt coke on my laptop when at a friends house, we claimed of our home insurance also we didn't have a reciept.

featured_spectre Posted September 18, 2011 Author Posted September 18, 2011 laptop is fixed!!! Ended up shorting the RAM, replaced it once it was dry and job is a good-un. Also had to replace touch-pad but thankfully there is a place near mine that will give you a discount if you give them the old broken stuff, so 2GB Ram + touchpad = £10.
