General admin tasks

Just wondering how many IT staff have to do basic tasks for the admin staff because they cannot do the job. Drives me nuts. I think I am going to have to draw the line at making an excel column auto fit contents.

So many requests like this. Admin member- been the corperate environment before using outlook or so the CV reads calls me can you come and add a calendar.

 

How many of you have to create reports in SIMS?

Plenty. However I do try to train rather than do.

 

I'll go down patiently show them how to do it and get them to it themselves. Always train, never do.

 

Having said that sometimes I will do SIMS reports, but

Only the massively complex, ones where the data is flushed through excel and analysed.

I once had to show the Senior Leader responsible for statistics (exam data etc.), who was also a Maths teacher, how to do =AVERAGE() in Excel. It was not the only time I did his Excel spreadsheets for him.

Yes, I agree, train not 'do'.

 

As for SIMS stuff.........forget it, not my area of expertise.

I regularly get asked to create reports in Sims however I now refuse to do them, purely because the school has paid for some members of the admin team to attend the "Sims Reporting" course and don't feel that it wouldn't be beneficial to my role for me to attend the same training. Therefore the people who have had the training can do report creation :-)

and now i spend most of my time in a day doing admin tasks-- am lucky to get 30 mins to do IT

I tend to end up doing sims reports, a few people have been on the courses and have the manuals but it appears to have gone in one ear and out the other as usual.

Maybe I was lucky, here, that IT was in such a parlous state when I was recruited.

 

At my interview I made it absolutely clear that 40 years in IT meant '40 years in IT', not '40 years in IT with some A/V thrown in, TV's, DVD players, a bit of SIMS data management, classroom supervision/monitoring and whatever else you think comes under the term Technical'.

 

They took me on, on those terms, and they are the terms I stick to. Nothing in my JD says otherwise, either.

I'm another one who tries to teach as opposed to just do.

 

How infuriating is it though that you can show somebody how to create a folder 1,000 times and they never learn, but the moment they ask you something you don't know straight off the top of your head...

Should come work next door with us, we always have IT work and if anyone says otherwise I offer them a place in our office for a week. They soon change their minds.

 

We do our best to train our staff, we dont DO it for them 90% of the time, they get paid to do their job not us

Exactly as above! It's only recently been the case though that admin staff have had some sort of basic test to show they can do basic admin tasks during the interview process.

Admin work is my job, I tend to collect takes off of other people and do it for them. It's good knowing people are coming to me for help though and I have learned a fair bit about Office and especially Excel. Still trying for the holy grail of Excel templates in SIMS mind you.

Also, even after being showed so many times, how hard can it be for a teacher to attach a laptop to a VGA cable for the hall projector and plug a small audio cable in.

We have made it as simple as poss. Cannot think how I can make it any more idiot proof. A simple box with two buttons on and off for projector and one switch for amp.

 

They would be blown away with how many buttons the real remote had!!

Thought teachers and SLT for that matter had to pass a basic IT test to become teachers

 

Constantly blown away with the ineptitude of these people.
