GPO to remove these options from explorer window?

Anyone know if there's a GPO to remove Network,Libraries and favorites from the explorer window in Windows 7? The only one I want to keep is Computer

I copied the text and saved it as a .adm file and placed in %windir%\inf

I want it to be a user specific policy so added the template in administrative templates on user config. I cant seem to find this policy to enable though? When you add an admin template is it auto enabled or do I need to find it some where to enable it?

Ok I found that it appears in computer config.

I can only use this as a computer policy then? Thats a bit rubbish...

You could try changing the class from machine to user on the adm and see if that works as a user setting. No guarantee though.

Gives an error when trying to add the adm file with that change. Thanks anyways

Assuming it's not a terminal server or something similar, you could try using group policy preferences to apply the reg keys with the "Remove when this policy no longer applies" option. Obviously the keys are HKLM, though, so be careful.

 

Edit: They may need a reboot to apply, though, so you could be stuffed there.

You can use reg fixes to get rid of them. Thats what I did.

It seems this can only been done per computer basic again then? I guess that will be ok.

To add one of these regs using GPP does this seem correct? ( I keep getting confused if I need update/repalce etc )

Yep unfortunately Win 7 is on the machines already so I need to push these settings out:)

I would do it per Computer if it were me. They wouldnt need them folders, I took them all out so they only have COmputer there.

Per computer seems to be the only way of doing it.

Hmm still struggling.

I beleive i set the policy correct now but it doesnt seem to be working and I get this error in event viewer

Why would access be denied?

Also if I try to manualy change this key value to a9400100 I get an error saying 'cannot edit attributes. Error writing the value's new content'

Can you give us a screenshot of the two pages of the GPP policy?

 

Initial thoughts: Where is it getting the name "Test" from? Are you trying to run this under the users security context? User or machine preference?

Sure.

The name 'Test' is the name of the GPO. I created a new separate policy and named it test whilst i'm testing it.

Here's a capture of the policy

 

I'm fairly confident that it's set up correctly after reading the links i've been given.

The error I see in event manager is this

Have you tried using HKLM instead of HKCR?

I'm being silly and making more work.

The main reason I was looking to find an alternative way of achieving this was because I was hoping to set the policy Per User instead of Per Computer. That doesn’t seem possible, so I can just go back to using the .adm file method that works perfectly for me because I understand how to set it up correctly:whoo:

 

Thanks to all though. The help is much appreciated and it's always nice to know more than one way of achieving a goal (Even if I’m unable to get it working!)
