log on times!!!

Afternoon all,

 

First day back today for the kids and staff (sick of getting asked how my holidays were..... erm I was here ALL SUMMER)

 

My question is what are the log on times for your machines in school? We have staff complaining that 30-40 seconds is to long? I think its quite fast considering the machines map the correct drives, printers and also our exchange OWA pops up (so staff read there emails)

 

What sort of log on times do you have at your spot?

Always an issue with Windows 7; initial logon time for a machine they haven't used is about 45 seconds. Subsequent logons on a machine that they have logged onto already takes less around half that time. But the system is still doing things like adding printers, etc.

30-40 seconds is nothing tbh.

What client are you running?

Redirecting a lot of the folders can help but really thats nothing for logins.

Redirect AppData and My Docs anyway. Also I have a script somewhere which will automatically clear out cookies older then a month as small files can bog login down.

Warning: Turning appdata redirection on may cause parts of their profiles to reset in XP but after the pain is done they will be fine. It didnt happen to all but it did occur for us.

On a 6 month old Dell of 'normal classroom spec' (if there is such a thing) takes 30-40 seconds here. Profiles are not cached here so are downloaded each logon from the server. Obviously, older hardware takes a few more seconds.

 

EDIT: After a little testing we're actually looking at 15-30 second logon times after the initial profile for that user has been created on the server.

I agree with the above 30-40 seconds is normal. You could enable Verbose status messages so it informs the user what it's doing!

It's worth noting that certain GPO settings do have a significant load time impact.

Over the summer we moved out entire school from a Windows XP environment to a Windows 7 environment, and we're getting around 25-40 second logon times on average here (after the first login). Everyone is estactic with that as the previous XP system would often take anywhere up to 5 minutes to log in!

Tbh I would recommend everyone does that, it really helps them feel something is going on and can really help diagnose things that are slowing logins.
