Is it common - Domain Forest

Are domain forests common in school or not i rember when i was in school, there was an option to select a domain which was for other schools up and down within the local authority then i worked in a school later on and found they all connected by a dedicated fibre optic line, otherwise i guess any joe-bloggs or fred flintsone could join/hack the domain if conncect via phone line, since bussines do set people to work from home.

 

After that while i working within on of the schools of the authority later on in life prob 4 years later i noticed that they still had the list but everyone logs in on one domain, but to my knowlege is that is there an sub active directory and it all copies it self to the master domain at the LA central.

 

Am i right in saying that these are both domain forests? and are they common setups?

It used to be setup like that for most high schools in Rochdale. Now they are all own there own domain. It caused more trouble than its worth.

What?

 

Basically you have a collection of domains in one forest. The FQDN goes like this

 

ChildDomain.ParentDomain.local

Without actually looking as the AD structure or knowing the FQ domain names it would be almost impossible to tell, as you can simply create trusts between un-related domains which has the same effect of having all the domains listed on the logon box.

I think it varys from LA to LA. I know it was battered about at one of our meetings about how Fronter and the idea of Centralised Filtering would have worked and been 110x easier and better if we all just had a global LA domain and were all on it but that wasn't wanted by us or the LA so we don't have one. So schools do there own thing which is great and works well for us, but does lead to some interesting setups and ideas which we shared and work with
