Oaktech Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Hi all, we have mainly successfully navigated to mire that is the office customization tool but we have just one problem hanging around which is causing us grief. When you start outlook for the first time, it gives a load of errors about being unable to find a profile, then about not being able to locate an exchange server, then about not being online, then quitting. When you then reopen outlook it prompts you to choose what profile to use with a default of 'establishment mail account' if you just click OK it opens up and behaves ok, but prompts every time, which is obviously unhelpful. we have been told by RM that it is not something we have done in the customization tool (which i'm not sure about), and everything to do with an out of date RM PRF file package, they sent us one over late last week which they promised would fix it, it hasn't. the little darlings are back in a week and we could really do with having fixed it by then. your help is very much appreciated
SYNACK Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Perhaps post the sanitised PRF and screenshots of the accounts section of the OCT. It sounds like it has set up a couple of profiles under the mail setting and the first one is wrong. You could probably use another PRF or reconfigured OCT file to wipe the existing profiles off each account and recreate them properly.
davipton Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Hi Oaktech, After upgrading to office 2010 this summer an issue was brought to my attention on A-Level results day by the staff. We are running CC4 with SP2. Basically when they clicked on the outlook icon it asked them for the exchange server settings. After a lot of head-scratching and complaining staff members of staff, i discovered that one of the System Packages had not installed the latest version to the workstations. The package was called something like "RM Outlook Setup 1.10.#.#". So after installing this to a couple of stations and then rebooting them and getting a couple members of staff to try again it worked fine!! I've got no idea why this was never installed on the workstations, but when station are rebuilt it is installed by default!! I hope this helps!!! Oaktech Posted September 1, 2011 Author Posted September 1, 2011 Ok, we have the system package RM outlook setup 1.10.3.0 which is installed system wide. we also have the following prf (on a separate post) which is referenced in group policy from RM, but not from our group policy (there in may lie our issue) the only settings in group policy relating to this are in our policy : automatically configure profile based on active directory primary smtp address = enabled and In RM's policy : specify a profile to use to auto configure outlook = enabled this is set to look to X:\outlook profiles and sees the prf file above. i suspect this is the issue, but i'm not in a position this week to go disabling big piles of GPO to test things as my boss man is on holiday this week.

davipton Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Oaktech, I guess from your posting that you are running a Community Connect network? If so, which version 3 or 4? When we moved to CC4 I had to change the location in the RMMC from being X:\...... to \\servername\share\Exchange.prf as the X drive is not used. If you are using CC3 you can use the X drive as you have stated. David 1
Oaktech Posted September 1, 2011 Author Posted September 1, 2011 Thanks for the input chaps... we are still cc3 (and likely to stay cc3 for a while, probably then go to vanilla microsoft) so the x drive is not an option. We currently have RM working on it with us, but they've been looking at it on 3rd line for over a week now and not been able to fix it.

I'm no expert when it comes to all the settings in the PRF files. Near the top in the "Section 2 - Services in profile" section we have a Service3 and Service4 in yours you have REM'ed out some settings in Service2 and all of Service3. This is what mines looks like: [service2] ;----------------------------------------------- HomeServer=EXCHANGESERVERNAME ;------------------------------------------------- ConversionProhibited=True MailboxName=%USERNAME% OfflineFolderPath=N:\My E-mail\Outlook\Outlook.OST OSTEncryptionType=0x80000000 [service3] EncryptionType=0x80000000 PathToPersonalFolders=N:\My E-mail\Outlook\personal.pst [service4] Ben = True [RM] Version=2 I do not necessarily know what you have been told to REM or not and i do not necessarily know what impact these settings might have on outlook connecting to the exchange server. RM have fiddled with it a bit, i've fiddled with it a bit, and we have now come to a new problem, which RM has pretty much washed their hands of. when the user opens out look for the first time it errors saying that there is no connection to the exchange server and that outlook must be online for the operation to complete. it then brings them to a screen to configure exchange accounts. i picks up the username correctly depending on who is logged in, but the server name is not recognised because it has a whole pile of AD garbage in front of it so it is not in a format the box can recognise, the server name it sticks in the box is (sanitized): /o=OURSCHOOLNAME/ou=First Administrative Group/cn=Configuration/cn=Servers/cn=OURMAILSERVERNAME if for a test user i edit the server name manually and insert: OURMAILSERVERNAME.internal in the box, it fixes it and seems to fix it forever. I have no idea where that server name string is being picked up from, and as RM have said they can't help any more we are screwed, or we have to manually edit the string everytime a user logs on, which is just a nightmare scenario.
PiqueABoo Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Thinking aloud... your appear to have AutoDiscovery configuration stuff in "our policy" mixed with the PRF configuration stuff, and it's not obvious to me which one is winning. I would definitely want to see what happens if you temporarily turn off the 'auto configure' setting, and logon as a CC3 account that's just had it's profile reset. Plus, for O2K3 and O2K7 at least, having just the NetBIOS name e.g. EXCHANGEBOX rather than a FQDN for the HomeServer= setting definitely works for CC3 systems - might be a reason but I don't really get why you need the FQDN in there.
Oaktech Posted September 5, 2011 Author Posted September 5, 2011 I was advised to put the suffix in there by RM, but i have now removed it from a test version of the prf and i still have the same issue, i'm awaiting my network manager to turn up so i can query removing the auto discover features, and also removing the 'enable auto configure profile based on primary smtp address' setting which i've also found turned on in gpo.
Ric_ Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 I know that this appears to be a RM-ish problem, but have you tried creating a new user without any profile settings and loading up Outlook? Autodiscover should then configure Outlook for you. IIRC you don't need to fiddle with GPO settings with Exchange 2010 and Outlook 2010.

Oaktech Posted September 15, 2011 Author Posted September 15, 2011 Just to let everyone who commented on this know, I've fixed the problem. By going through a 'fake' OCT process -nas in, I ran the setup.exe /admin on my workstation, never saved an MSP file but configured outlook as required and then exported the settings. then manually placed the prf on a test machine, reset the profile of the test user and removed the settings folder for it from docs and settings. rebooted the machine and everything worked like a charm. so, technician: 1 - RM: 0
KK20 Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 Are the users "ex 2003 outlook" users? We had a similar issue after I upgraded a few test PCs to outlook 2010. In the end I changed the MSP outlook install to "not upgrade existing profiles" which cured a very similar problem.
