Disclaimer: Do not do this if you wish to remove SP1. This changes system files so any breaking of systems is at your own risk. :)

If your happy with your win 7 sp 1 install you can remove the backup files created (the winsxs folder):

Start-cmd right click run as administrator

In the dos window put:

dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded

About five to ten min latter it will have cleared all the SP files up for you.

Space used before this: 105Gb

Spaced used after this: 103Gb

It should look like the below when done:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

You can do something simlar from disk cleanup - just run it on your OS disk and select 'clean up system files' - then on the list you will find service pack backup files :)

You can also use disk cleanup to get rid of old snapshots/system restore points which helps to cut down on the space usage (expecily if you have a small SSD!).

120GB does all I need ;) (in my work PC)

Its my good old WD VelociRaptor 300GB drive (home gaming PC) thats feeling the pain though - need to get one of the new bigger ones or just go SSD.
