russdev Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 Just wondering if people use twitter or not.. Seems it can be used as good server down notification service type thing.. Russell
ajbritton Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 How do you use it as a server down notification service?
russdev Posted April 2, 2007 Author Posted April 2, 2007 Not doing at moment.. But if can find something that monitors public ip/url of your server that sends you an email then you could set an email address up that php script monitors that will pull any email from it send it via twitter. I currently use a php script that have setup a cron job so can email twitter updates looking to into server monitor part.. Russell
russdev Posted April 3, 2007 Author Posted April 3, 2007 If look at my profile the idea from an im client, twiiter.com or moble phone i can send a message. Then anyone who has added me to there list either gets an im or text message (depending on how you have set it) with that messsage. Original idea is that friends can keep in touch but service through use of api's can be used for lot more for example here is one for bbc education news I added them as friend then i get bbc news updates on my phone. Here is another example mlb.com news and EduGeek.net twitter feed is http://twitter.com/edugeekuk. You get the idea here is Roberts Scobles twitter feed http://twitter.com/Scobleizer. The thing I was on about is that as free and here in uk we don't pay to recieve text messages then it makes good notificaton service. Look here for lots of twitter scripts etc http://twitter.pbwiki.com/ Russell
webman Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Ok sorry to revive this thread, but I've been looking into this recently for the uses Russ mentions - eg. set up a Twitter account and monitoring software can send messages via this, I follow it on twitter and get the updates... I've since created a PHP script using the CURL extensions; and a simple AutoIt program that takes the status update via the command line. I'll upload them if anyone's interested
jann Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 yes i would be interested in that webman if you could upload it please
shauncarter1 Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 I am a heavy twitter user as a information sharing tool. I follow a few of the industry tech guys like Brian Madden the TS/Citrix Guru, who post frequently. I have never thought about using it as a notification tool. I guess that would require some software as well as everyone having an established account. Speaking of software TweetDeck is probably the best Twitter App for the desktop if you're interested
