right bare with me is this doesn't make sense at first :p

im looking at setting up and archive for some old data that we have sitting on our file server.

what i woudl like to be able to do is move the data to a dvd somewhere but leave behind (where the data lived) an image of the data that has been moved to storage.

its kind alike remote storage but hopefully i want a net message to say insert disk 3 etc

is there anyway of doing this?

oh its server 2000 :)

Build a cheap FreeNAS [ http://www.freenas.org ] box and either copy the data to it or stick the drive in with the data on in the NAS box ? Freenas supports [ to a level - NTFS ] - in fact checking the latest beta its NTFS support is now a little better......

I think what mudcow007 wants is a facility like old mainframes used.

e.g program wants some data but the OS has archived it off to a tape somewhere so it alerts an operator to go and get the tape (DVD in this case) and make it available.

Yes?
