Oaktech Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Ok, i'm aware i'm probably being dim here, but anyway. Our receptionist has posted a word document to server drive, she has sent a link to it around to all staff. sadly she posted the wrong document. I now need to delete the wrong document and replace it with the correct one of the same name. the problem is people have it open and it is locked and i can't work out how to delete it or rename it. Aparently this happens sometimes and our helpdesk deals with it, but as it is the last day our helpdesk is not here! Your help is appreciated.
denon101 Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Go to computer management, either on the server or your machine. Open shared folders and open files. From here you can close the files that people have open. Then you can replace the file. People can then open the corret document. Hope that helps 1
Guest TheLibrarian Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Log in to the server that holds the file. Run fsmgmt.msc Use the management console to close the file handles - voila!
Steve21 Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Depends what it's on, If it's on 08R2 there's a function to do it normally. "Share and Storage Management" There's option to manage open files, then force close anyone with the selected file open. Steve 1
joe90bass Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 On server 2003 you can go into Computer management > Shared folders > open files and disconnect the file in there. I don't know where this is in 2008 as our file server is 2003.... 1
Oaktech Posted July 22, 2011 Author Posted July 22, 2011 Many thanks peeps... fsmgmt.msc did the trick. I've never had to go looking for it before as my previous system had it in the context menu for shared drives. Cheers
