Replace 2003 DC running DNS with 2008 DC running DNS

Can anyone advise the implications on our network of our DNS server changing?

 

I believe anything that runs off DHCP will be fine but any items with static IP addresses might need us to manually edit the DNS entry because our new 2008 server will obviously have a different IP than our current DNS server...

If you are going to completely replace the current server then I would not bother with changing the DNS settings on the clients.

 

As long as you can do the migration out of hours then you will be able to promote the new server, transfer all data, transfer FSMO roles, set up DHCP on the the new server and then demote the old server. You can then change the IP address of the old server to something else and then give the new server the IP address of the old server. This way DNS can stay the same on the static clients.

 

Of course, if you are keeping the existing server then you could leave it running alongside the 2008 DC until all static clients DNS settings have been pointed to the new server.
