Keep backup space down?

We currently have a backup taken online every evening. Recently this has been failing due to lack of space on our package.

 

Last night however after much cleaning out of files and reducing quotas, some how it jumped by 9 GBs. we have no idea how this happened, as our staff never produce more than 1GB of data a day tops.

 

Are there any areas I should be looking to clean out on the server or anything I should be looking at in particular, as I need the backups to go through.

 

We have an RM CC4 Network. Any help would be great!

Did someone dump some large video files on your network somewhere? Search for files by size, see where the largest ones are?

Is the online backup incremental by any chance?

 

Maybe there wasn't actually 9GB of additional data. Maybe with you searching the hard drive to clean / free up space etc the scanned file / folder's modified datestamp may have been altered. Therefore the backup software would identify this is a changed file / folder and add it to the next (incremental?) backup, hence big increase in backed up files from the previous day.

 

Just one possible explanation!

A quick look has shown there are no folders in users documents that are over 500mb which is a right pain. We are having a clear out on photos that are older than 2007 which has reduced one of the worse users by 50% (Shows the stuff teachers collect!)

It does seem the backups are incremental so I would imagine what you mentioned MYK-IT is possible.

 

I am just going to keep tidying and making sure quotas are inforced. Some how the two teachers with the largest amounts of data saved did not have quotas enabled. This has been done now!

Get hold of sequioa view or the other one like it...

 

If you run this against the drive where the files are, it will graphically show where all the files are, and their size.
