Tablet PCs - recommendations??

Senior "management" instruct me to buy some tablets because they're "good". As I subliminally suspect that I should be posting this under the "White Elephant" thread - anyone use one that they think is OK? And of course - anyone use one that should be avoided?

Tablet PC's are a gimmick. M$ provides poor support, they are expensive. slow and generally a poor cousin of a decent laptop costing half as much. Whay do they want tablets?

And please don't say 'note taking'. A pad and pen is far faster and cheaper.

We don't use tablets here but the ppl that provide most of our laptops are pretty decent.

I see that my comment about White Elephants wasn't amiss - however - I am obliged to buy some - so - anyone recommend one or shall I just thrown darts at a list and see what happens?

I have a couple of Acer's that are pretty good although they needed very large RAM upgrades (as DB said the performance was awful). Although I'm hoping they never go wrong so I don't have to deal with the evil spawn that is Acer warranty support...

I'd recommend looking at Insight - they have an HP tablet for £829... haven't used one myself but would say that's your safest bet... and a decent price too...

Toshiba Tecra M4 ... a Laptop with a swivel screen to give you the best of both worlds.

 

We have them to hook up to a Toshiba SW20e wireless projector and use as a virtual whiteboard.

 

We originally just had 3 M200's (one in Maths, humanities and ICT ...) and they have been used very well ... so we have picked up a few more for humanities now and we have now gone for the M4 ...

 

I will try and have a few to hand for the 26th for people to have a look at.

Hi Guys,

 

Yep, as "Tarquel" mentioned, all our teachers have Tablet PCs, we use the RM Teacher Tablet, seem to be a good build at a good price. They are slate style Tablets so don't have any CD-Rom Drives, Floppys or Keyboards; we have bought "Clip On" Keyboards should they want to use them.

 

We are using the Tablets to connect to Sims and use Lesson Monitor to register AM/PM and Class Registers, also for staff to run reports from Sims, do their Pupil Reports.

 

We are using the Tablets as an alternate to Interactive Whiteboards, We have got them connected Wirelessly to Projectors, advantage is better classroom management, teacher can walk around the class, stand next to people mis-behaving and also pass the tablet to people sitting in their seats save coming to the front, we found that some pupils want to take part in Interactive Activities but didn't like standing in front the whole class.

 

Also when using the Tablet for Interactive Activities, it's alot clearer to see the screen then standing in front of the Projected surface

Take at look at this beauty before you throw the baby out with the bath water. It's Lenovo kit but as the T43 has had good reviews from other TP-ers... Perhaps the price might scare them off, especially as you'd need to include one at least one docking station.

Tablets ARE good at the things they're useful for. Which isn't sitting around being "good". Kinda like any tool really, if you need one then get one and use it in good health, if you're getting one to impress other people or to keep up with the jonses then you'll regret it.
