Documents Folder Re-direction - can't get my head around it :(

Server is 2003.

Win7 clients being tested.

Folder re-direction for desktop is fine.

(Basic - Redirect everyone's folder to the same location : Redirect to the following location : \\server-name\foldername)

 

I am running a mixture of windows XP and windows 7 clients.

 

My group policies are filtered by WMI and I'm working solely on a Documents redirect policy.

Office products using a GPO for Office set the default save location to H:\ and this works well.

 

My problem is re-directing the Docements folder link so that other software defaults to the users H:\ drive for saves rather than the local; C:\users

 

The users have a share (folder) on the file server which is created manually:

ie D:\users\staff\ and shared hidden.

Share permissions are "everyone" full.

Administrators/Domain Admins and the teacher are given FULL control on the Security Tab of the folder properties.

 

It seems I have three options when choosing how to redirect Documents:

1. Redirect to the user's home directory:

This fails : Event viewer on the local PC states:

Failed to apply policy and redirect folder "Documents" to "\\fp2\jpr$\".

Redirection options=0x1219.

The following error occurred: "Can not create folder "\\fp2\jpr$"".

Error details: "This security ID may not be assigned as the owner of this object.

However the following folders are automatically created:

My Music/My Pictures/My Videos

(I have these items in the GPO to follow Documents)

However on the local PC if I open up WordPad and try to save a document it does not save to the users H:\ drive.

 

 

2. Create a folder for each user under the root path:

I put \\servername\d$\users\staff

But this then wants to redirect to a new folder called Documents which would be in the users H:\ drive which I do not want.

I've tried using system variables such as "\\servername\d$\users\staff\%username%$

But it does nt retain the information when I try and apply as if variables are not allowable.

 

4. Redirect to the local userprofile location

This is nt want I want as I want to map to a central place...

If I edit : User Configuration - Admin Templates - Windows Components - Windows Explorer - Turn off Windows Libraries features that rely on indexed file data = Enabled.

 

& use option 1 above it works EXCEPT:

When I check on the server ther users folder name which was their initials has changed to the word DOCUMENTS!!!!!!

A wonderful windows 7 feature *sarcasm*

 

Seemingly if you prevent the users having rights over the desktop.ini file it prevents the folder being renamed. We ideally don't want to go down this route. We are currently looking into using an environment variables in conjunction with the desktop.ini file - I'll post more on this if/when our test prooves fruitful

I use the file screening feature of windows 2008 to stop the desktop.ini files from being created... works a treat

How do you cope with users folders that already exist, and therefore already have a desktop.ini?

It does, but I found it increased initial logon times by 5 to 15 seconds, does this not happen to you?
